PROVO, Utah--()--In recognition of National Pet Awareness Month, Vivint, a leading provider of smart home technology, is raising awareness of how smart home technology can remotely protect, monitor and care for pets.

Many Vivint customers own a pet, as do nearly 60 percent of Americans.1 To most of these people, pets are like family. But according to the American Humane Association, more than 10 million dogs and cats in the U.S. are lost or stolen every year.

A new report from NextMarket Insights sponsored by Vivint found that many customers are using smart home technology to more easily and conveniently protect their pets, while also keeping them healthy. The full report, “The Mass Market Smart Home: Examining Use Cases to Drive Smart Home Adoption,” is available at www.vivint.com/usecases.

“Americans spend nearly $60 billion on their pets each year,” said Mike Wolf, founder of NextMarket Insights and author of the report. “More people are investing in smart home technology because of its proven ability to help minimize the risk of losing their pet. Maintaining a connection to a pet is one of top uses for smart home systems.”

Whether customers are on vacation, at work or running errands, Vivint smart home technology makes it easy to check in on a pet’s well-being from a smartphone, tablet or computer. A simple, affordable Vivint smart home system helps customers keep their pets healthy and protected in several ways:

  • Monitoring a pet. Vivint users can view live HD video of their pets from installed cameras throughout the home and yard, allowing them to check in throughout the day. They can also monitor their pet’s health. For example, pet obesity has become a major issue – one study found 52 percent of dogs and 58 percent of cats are overweight.2 It’s important for owners to monitor their pet’s habits, such as food and water intake and activity level, and to adjust where needed.
  • Keeping pets safe. A Vivint smart home provides a variety of sensors to alert customers of potential problems, including fire, carbon monoxide or if a door or window is left open. A significant number of pets – some estimates up to 6 million3 – are killed every year by wandering out of the house and into the street.
  • Providing keyless entry for dog walkers or pet sitters. Even while customers are away from home they can ensure their pets are active and cared for. Vivint smart locks create temporary pass codes that allow easy access for a dog walker or pet sitter. Customers can also receive guest entry and departure notifications to confirm their pet is being taken care of on a regular basis.

“My Vivint system has made caring for and watching my dogs while I’m away from home simple and convenient,” said Hannah D. from Little Rock, Arkansas. “Using my iPad, I’ve been able to unlock the door for the dog sitter, watch my dogs get cared for and lock the door once the sitter leaves. My husband and I have even had a few good laughs at watching the way our dogs interact when they think no one is home.”
