Caradigm Expands Healthcare Identity and Access Management to Include Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances

EPCS Solution Provides Automated Access Privilege Authentication and Integration Capabilities to Meet State, Federal Requirements

BELLEVUE, Wash.--()--Caradigm, the leader in enterprise population health, today announced that it has added Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) to its Identity and Access Management (IAM) portfolio. Caradigm EPCS is designed specifically to confront challenges faced by hospitals, clinics and other organizations that electronically prescribe controlled substances by streamlining clinical workflows and simplifying the two-factor authentication imposed by the DEA and state regulations.

A growing number of federal and state regulations ensure appropriate controls around electronic prescriptions for controlled substances. While substances listed on Schedules II-V can be prescribed for medical use, some states impose even more stringent requirements in addition to those set by the DEA. Caradigm EPCS manages critical aspects of EPCS workflows and integrates with multiple third-party systems that provide complementary functions required to meet all federal and state regulations end-to-end. This process runs from the time the drugs are ordered, through fulfillment and delivery.

Caradigm EPCS is part of its IAM portfolio, which includes Single Sign-On, Context Management and Provisioning Identity Management. Caradigm’s IAM solutions address the operational challenges of access to clinical applications, while safeguarding access to patient health information from increasing external security and compliance risks. IAM’s single sign-on, authentication and provisioning capabilities are augmented in the EPCS solution by the broadest set of two-factor authentication capabilities offered by Caradigm partners. A DEA-approved EPCS certification test organization will attest that Caradigm EPCS meets relevant federal regulations.

“Caradigm believes that the most critical aspect of our customer relationships is the partnership we forge to maintain security of data and clinical workflows,” said Mike Willingham, VP Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, Caradigm. “We are thrilled to be able to offer EPCS capabilities to our customers, as it enables them to leverage their IAM investment to both increase organizational levels of efficiency and security, and meet state and federal requirements.”

Caradigm EPCS supports key capabilities for authorizing prescribers:

  • Confirmation of prescribing privileges
  • Credentials for providers in alignment with two-factor authentication
  • Access controls—role-based access controls (RBAC) and provisioning
  • Auditing and reporting

Caradigm EPCS also supports key capabilities for signing prescriptions:

  • Two-factor authentication—biometric authentication via BIO-key™, or other device; one-time password (OTP) option
  • Credential checking and authentication confirmation
  • Access-privilege checking and EPCS-access confirmation
