GATINEAU, Quebec--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Medically developed weight loss method Ideal Protein has been shown to significantly reduce cholesterol and high triglyceride levels according to results from a research study presented at ObesityWeek 2015.
Ideal Protein is a physician-directed, four-phase repeatable weight loss method. Phase one - a low calorie, normal protein, low carbohydrate diet - targets the root cause of weight gain, the body’s overproduction of insulin. Performed by Aspirus, the research study sought to determine the effect of phase one of Ideal Protein on reducing triglycerides. 752 participants were studied over a twelve week period.
Triglycerides, a type of fat found in the blood, are an important measure of cardiac health. Overweight and obese patients commonly have high triglyceride levels, which can lead to heart disease and other complications including high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and diabetes. Guidelines published by the National Cholesterol Education Program define normal triglyceride levels as less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).
Results from the study, entitled ‘The Effect of a Very Low Carbohydrate Diet on Triglycerides,’ showed a reduction in triglyceride levels from 126±72 to 75±41mg/dL as well as a reduction in total cholesterol and non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (lipid abnormalities associated with increased risk of heart disease):
- Total cholesterol decreased from 185±37 to 163±36 mg/dL
- Non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased from 131±35 to 110±33mg/dL
Cardiologist Timothy Logemann, MD, co-author of the study, said, “As we have become a more sedentary society surrounded by unhealthy food choices, it’s increasingly common for patients to store fat in the form of triglycerides. Weight management is key to keeping triglyceride levels in a healthy range. This study has produced exciting and encouraging results for cardiologists and healthcare practitioners looking for ways to help our patients get healthier amidst a national obesity crisis.”
A healthier lifestyle education is a key component of all phases of Ideal Protein, which features personalized, one-on-one coaching and a diet plan to promote losing fat while maintaining lean muscle mass. The weight loss method is available at more than 3,000 medical establishments in the U.S. and Canada.
Results from the Aspirus study are on display at ObesityWeek 2015 in Los Angeles, November 4 - 6. ObesityWeek is the largest gathering of health care professionals devoted to the care and understanding of the obese patient in the world.
