Renesas Electronics America and Verizon to Join Forces to Connect Things to the Internet

ANAHEIM, Calif.--()--Renesas DevCon — Today, Renesas Electronics America, a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Verizon Communications, jointly announced that they are collaborating to empower product designers connecting their systems to the cloud using seamlessly integrated design platforms.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is opening up new business opportunities with tangible and measurable benefits for existing and emerging markets, from smart, connected devices to the networks, infrastructures and technologies that enable them. According to its “State of the Market the Internet of Things 2015” report, Verizon expects IoT connections to reach 5.4 billion worldwide by 2020. A recent report from market research firm IDC forecasts the worldwide IoT market to jump from $658.8 billion in 2014 to $1.7 trillion in 2020, with devices (modules/sensors), connectivity, and IT services comprising the majority of the 2020 IoT market. IDC also expects purpose-built platforms, application software, and “as a service” offerings to capture a larger revenue percentage by 2020.

“The proliferation of IoT-enabled networks enables a new era of embedded computing, the Platform era, where establishing seamless and efficient connections between platforms will enable companies to focus more on core competencies and less on building infrastructure,” said Ali Sebt, President, Renesas Electronics America. “Working together, Renesas and Verizon could help customers plan for whatever the future of IoT may bring. We are excited to bring these capabilities to customers through our innovative embedded IoT technologies and Verizon’s comprehensive network infrastructure.”

“As global leaders, Verizon and Renesas share a similar vision with our IoT strategies, to provide strong solutions for companies creating IoT-enabled applications and devices,” said Mark Bartolomeo, Vice President IoT Connected Solutions, Verizon. “With the combination of our network infrastructure and Renesas Synergy™ Platform, we expect that companies will be able to go from concept to product to services in a shorter period of time.”

Once data moves from the Edge devices into the cloud, managed services become a top priority to improve services, efficiencies, and decision-making intelligence. As most companies don’t have this infrastructure in place, it becomes a classic Make vs. Buy decision. Renesas and Verizon deliver solutions to support companies’ decision to “Buy”. The Renesas Synergy Platform enables companies to jump start their application product development at the software API level leveraging Renesas’ embedded infrastructure.

Together, the Renesas Synergy Platform and Verizon’s network infrastructure can enhance a designer’s ability to create and deliver end-to-end IoT-enabled products to market. The API-based platforms allow embedded system product designers to focus their resources on designing innovative and differentiated applications rather than spending large amounts of time on the lower level programing of infrastructure.

Verizon’s Mark Bartolomeo will join CEOs from Zebra Technologies and Harbrick for a IoT fireside panel chat and Q&A with DevCon attendees at the Renesas developers’ conference, DevCon 2015, which takes place October 12-15 in Anaheim, Calif.
