Curelator Headache: New Digital Tool Identifies “Protectors” for People with Migraine Headache

Patient S' Individual Protector Map shows physical activity, both at mild and moderate levels, is associated with lower risk of migraine attacks. Tea is also linked to lowering migraine risk in this patient. Curiously, the results also indicate that tyramine, a compound commonly believed to be a migraine trigger actually shows up as a Protector in this patient. Tyramine is found in certain foods such as cured meats and cheeses; the scientific rationale for tyramine as a migraine trigger is less than rigorous. (Graphic: Curelator Headache)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--()--Curelator Headache is a new digital tool that guides people with migraine headache to identify their personal triggers and for the first time, discover their “protectors,” and dismiss factors not associated with their attacks.

Alec Mian, PhD, CEO and founder of Curelator Inc., explains: “Curelator Headache helps each individual user identify a variety of factors—dietary, emotional and even environmental—that may lessen their risk of migraine attack. We call these “protectors.” Our application also identifies triggers that may increase risk of attack and factors our users may be avoiding for no good scientific reason that may not be associated with their attacks.”

Users’ results are delivered as Individual Trigger, Protector, and No Association Maps.. Curelator Headache is easily accessed on a smartphone (currently iPhone or iPad only). Users spend 2-3 minutes per day tracking a pre-set list of factors for 45 to 90 days (depending on frequency of migraines).

There are two versions of Curelator Headache currently available:

  • The Free version of Curelator Headache offers a daily tracker built on Curelator Headache’s Visual Migraine Language (VML) and provides periodic progress reports of personal tracking data that can be shared with a physician. If free users wish, they can generate their Trigger, Protector and No Association Maps by upgrading to the Premium version of Curelator Headache.
  • The Premium version ($49.99 introductory price) offers users all the benefits of the free version in addition to providing the option to enter and track custom triggers and protectors. Premium users can generate and download Individual Trigger, Protector and No Association Maps™ after 45 - 90 days. After receiving their individual maps, they may continue to experiment with changing their triggers and protectors and measuring the impact on their condition. The maps are dynamic; they reflect each individual’s continuously changing circumstances.

Dr. Noah Rosen, Director Headache Center, Cushing Neuroscience Institute/North Shore University-LIJ Health System and a member of the Curelator Headache Advisory Board, describes the benefits of this new approach:

“This is the most promising digital product that I know of for migraine patients for clinical use. It allows patients to be directly involved in the management of their condition, emphasizes discovery of factors that are associated with both increasing and decreasing risk of an attack and allows for greater personalization of treatment.”

In addition to Dr. Rosen, Curelator Headache’s Clinical Advisory Board includes some of the world’s most prominent headache neurologists: Peter Goadsby, MD PhD, Kings College; Richard B. Lipton, MD, Director, Montefiore Headache Center; Anne MacGregor, MD, Specialist in Headache and Women’s Health Barts Health NHS Trust; Paul R. Martin, OAM, FBPsS, Hon FAPS, School of Applied Psychology, Griffith University; Stephen D. Silberstein, MD, Director, Jefferson Headache Center; Egilius L.H. Spierings, MD, PhD, CPI, Tufts University; Christian Wöber, MD, Medical University of Vienna.
