AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL) today introduced its new SB0400 and SB0401 products – the industry’s first highly integrated, dedicated circuits (ICs) specifically engineered for motorcycle and scooter applications. By incorporating these 7 x 7 millimeter devices into their designs, manufacturers of electronic control units (ECUs) no longer must rely on much larger ABS ICs developed for automobiles, and instead can realize dramatic savings in cost, weight and space with advanced analog parts designed specifically for motorcycles and scooters.
Freescale’s new two-wheel SB0400 IC is designed for use with motorcycles, while the single-wheel SB0401 IC is intended for scooters and lighter motorcycles. Both products are leadless, and neither require bulky heat sinks, saving system cost and space. Featuring Freescale’s SMARTMOS analog-mixed signal technology, the devices integrate an ABS system’s wheel speed sensor interface, valve drivers, motor pump driver, safety switch and safety state machine into the smallest package size available on the market for motorcycle and/or scooter designs.
Freescale’s introduction of the products coincides with the upcoming initial implementation of European Commission legislation making the fitment with ABS for all new motorcycles above 125cc to be mandatory beginning 1 January 2016.
“Freescale is extending its decades of experience and leadership in automotive safety silicon – and ABS systems specifically – to the motorcycle and scooter markets, where the incorporation of advanced ABS technology holds the potential to significantly enhance driver safety,” said Patrick Morgan, general manager for ADAS Radar and Safety Products for Freescale. “As braking requirements for two-wheel vehicles grow increasingly stringent, Freescale is responding with highly innovative new designs that enhance driver safety while helping manufacturers of electronic motor control systems meet critical safety requirements, while saving cost, space and weight.”
Compatible hardware and software between the two new ICs greatly reduces system design efforts and enables easy implementation. Integrated hardware safety functions for protection/diagnostics include over-voltage (OV), under voltage (UV), over temperature, short and open load detection.
