INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Anthem, Inc. (NYSE: ANTM) today announced that Craig Samitt, MD, MBA will join the company as Chief Clinical Officer, effective September 21, 2015. In this newly established role, Dr. Samitt will report directly to Joseph R. Swedish, President and Chief Executive Officer, Anthem, and will also serve as a member of the company’s Executive Leadership Team.

Dr. Samitt has more than 20 years of experience leading integrated delivery systems and currently serves as a Partner and Global Provider Practice Leader of the Health & Life Sciences Practice for Oliver Wyman, the international management consulting firm. Prior to joining Oliver Wyman, Dr. Samitt served as the President & CEO of HealthCare Partners, a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners. From 2006 through 2013, Dr. Samitt was President & CEO of the Dean Health System in Wisconsin, one of the largest integrated delivery systems in the Midwest. Previously, he served as Chief Operating Officer at Fallon Clinic (now Reliant Medical Group) in Massachusetts, as Senior Vice President on the turnaround team of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and as Chief of Medicine and Site Medical Director at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (now Atrius Health). Dr. Samitt is currently in his fourth year as an appointee on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC).
Dr. Samitt graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Tufts University, received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, completed his clinical training at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and earned his MBA from the Wharton School. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
