British Columbia Student Achieves a Perfect Score in IB Diploma 2015 Examination - One in 160 Students Worldwide

and one of only five in Canada to achieve a 45

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--()--Mulgrave School graduates are celebrating after receiving their results for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) examination session and earning high scores, far surpassing the IB Diploma worldwide average. Among them is Ms. Jolee Tung, who is one of only 160 students worldwide to score 45 points (a perfect score) in the IBDP final assessments. These results, taken from the 141,830 students who sat the May 2015 examination session worldwide, place Ms. Tung in the exclusive company of four other students from Canada and two from the United States - the only perfect scores in Northern America.

The IB Diploma Programme is lauded by educators and university admissions officers around the world for measuring the extent to which students have mastered advanced academic skills in six subjects, while also testing adeptness at analysis, evaluation, problem-solving and argumentation.

“It was certainly a surprise,” said Ms. Tung of the results. “However, more so than earning the ‘pinnacle’ 45 score, what I appreciate and find the most fulfilling is the impact of the learning experience from my IB education at Mulgrave and the lifelong relationships I have made with my peers and my teachers.” Ms. Tung, who will be attending University of Toronto this fall, studied at Mulgrave since 2006. During her time at Mulgrave, she has been a first responder as part of the school’s Medical Emergency Response Team, a Swim Team Captain, Deputy Head Girl and excelled as an alto saxophonist in the school’s jazz band, while also earning a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Achieving a top Level 7 in all six major subjects plus securing an A grade for both the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge course is extremely difficult. Combining top grades in the intensive terminal examination period alongside a range of ongoing internal assessments eludes many of the most able IB students worldwide making the award of 45 a truly exceptional achievement.

“The IB programme is renowned for providing a broad and well-rounded international education alongside a rigorous academic programme and Jolee’s academic and non-academic achievements are a great testament to the success of this philosophy,” said John Wray, Head of School at Mulgrave. “Her remarkable talents and leadership were fueled by the many authentic learning experiences available through a Mulgrave IB education, which in turn, have inspired creativity, collaboration and dedication in others.”

One of 355 IB World Schools in Canada, Mulgrave School has been offering the IB Diploma Programme since 2005 and is one of only six IB continuum schools in British Columbia offering all three IB programmes from K-12.
