RealD Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit with the Paris First Instance Court

Suit Contends Infringement of RealD European Patent Related to the Company’s 3D Projection Technology

LOS ANGELES--()--Global visual technology company RealD Inc. (NYSE: RLD) announced today that the company has filed a lawsuit with the Paris First Instance Court against a 3D manufacturer and a cinema operator for infringement of RealD’s European patent related to their XL Cinema System, 3D cinema projection technology.

“RealD takes its investments in its technology and the associated intellectual property very seriously and we will actively take steps to enforce our IP rights in France and around the world,” said Anthony Marcoly, President, Worldwide Cinema at RealD. “Having worked with French authorities, including a technical investigation ordered by the court and conducted by the court’s bailiff under a Saisie-contrefaçon order, we are moving forward with this legal action to protect our intellectual property.”

European patent No. 2067066, entitled “Polarization Conversion Systems for Stereoscopic Projection” claims priority to original US filings beginning in September 2006. This European patent was issued on November 5, 2014, designating France among many other European states. The patent relates to a polarization conversion system for three-dimensional (3D) projection utilizing a cinema projector. More particularly, the invention relates to the RealD XL Cinema System’s polarization conversion technology, which uses several polarized light bundles on different light paths in order to obtain brighter images.

“RealD has a significant patent position around its XL Cinema System technology in many countries, including the United States, Europe, Russia, China, Japan, S. Korea, Australia, Brazil, Canada, India and Mexico, and we will vigorously enforce our intellectual property rights against any and all infringing companies,” said Neil Mothew, Vice President, Intellectual Property and Legal Affairs.

The RealD XL Cinema System was introduced in 2008 and today is the world’s most widely used 3D cinema projection technology with more than 15,000 units installed around the world. The XL Cinema System delivers better light efficiency than any other 3D cinema projection technology, and as a result, it provides a superior projected 3D image at a lower operating cost.

The world’s most widely used 3D cinema technology, RealD 3D is installed in more than 26,500 auditoriums by approximately 1,200 exhibitors in 72 countries around the world.
