BRENTWOOD, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Roughly 75% of the assessments that take place in the Addiction Campuses call center are dual diagnosis - meaning the caller struggles with one or multiple addictions in addition to another type of mental imbalance such as depression or posttraumatic stress disorder. Because of this, the company has released a FREE, downloadable infographic to educate victims of trauma on how to cope with the stress of their tragedy in the healthiest way possible.

“We get calls about rape, physical and sexual abuse, bullying, child abuse,” says Addiction Campuses CEO Brent Clements. “These types of events leave emotional scars on people that can last a lifetime. If left untreated, they most certainly can lead to any number of harmful addictions.”
The FREE infographic, titled “Addiction Transfer: the Domino Effect,” is designed not only to expose the link between mental trauma and addiction, but to educate victims on how to take control of their pain, and keep it from manifesting in ways that are harmful to themselves and those around them.
Here are some of the most commonly revealed traumas at our campus, and how they have related to addiction:
- Sexual Abuse: Because sexual assaults are often committed by someone close to the victim, there are feelings of embarrassment and fear that deter some from seeking out help. Self-medication or substance abuse is quite often a temporary solution for the pain of these types of secrets.
- Emotional/Physical Childhood Abuse: Victims of childhood abuse have an increased likelihood to turn to drugs or alcohol later in life. People often turn to substances to dull the stress of flashbacks, feelings of rage and nightmares.
- Grief: Losing someone close to us can take an emotional toll on our mental state. Some attempt to numb the pain with drugs or alcohol, increasing the risk for an addiction.
- Crime/Accidents: When someone survives a car accident or is the victim of a violent crime, they can experience horror, fear, rage and feelings of helplessness. They feel turning to alcohol or drugs can give them a temporary relief from the memories of that incident.
- Natural Disaster: Surviving a catastrophic event such as an earthquake can be life-altering. These events can replay in a person’s mind until they find an off switch such as alcohol or drugs.
