JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EverBank is pleased to announce the winners of The 3rd Annual EverBank Cup Contest, recognizing outstanding achievement in data mining and analytics by Florida higher education students.
Justin Mooney, a Master’s degree student at the University of Central Florida was named first place winner of the contest, which was judged by a panel of five analytics experts. Tamal Ghosh of the University of Florida finished in second place, and Robert Norberg of the University of Central Florida placed third.
The contest consisted of three classification tasks based on simulated lending data. Between January 12 and March 13, contestants worked to develop their models. This year, over 30 students from Florida colleges and universities submitted entries with their executive summary, data preparation, modeling approach, results and conclusions competing for $2,000 in cash prizes awarded to the top three winners.
“Data mining and analytics are highly complex skills that are absolutely vital to today’s information-based economy,” said Lisa Johnston, EverBank Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “At EverBank, we use analytics every day to inform business decisions and improve our client experiences, and we are strong supporters of programs that teach and develop data mining. I’m very impressed by the work and findings from all of the participants in this year’s EverBank Cup Contest. I congratulate all of our competitors, particularly Justin, Tamal and Robert.”
The contest winners were announced at The Big Data Analytics Symposium on April 8, 2015, at The University of Central Florida. Kimberly Cooper, EverBank Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Client Analytics, presented the EverBank Cup and cash awards to the top three winners.
“Participating in the EverBank Cup has been an exciting and rewarding experience, and winning first place is a tremendous accomplishment for me,” said Justin Mooney. “The problem presented in the contest was difficult, but I really enjoyed the challenge and the mix of advanced statistics and data handling.”
The EverBank Cup Contest began in 2013 to foster the relationships in the data mining community. EverBank has a longstanding recruiting partnership with The University of Central Florida and the school’s analytics programs.
