CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--eClinicalWorks® and Epic, two of the most widely used electronic health record systems (EHR) in the U.S., today jointly announce interoperability between the companies’ EHR systems using the Carequality framework. This real-time data transfer between the systems facilitates coordination of care between providers in various care settings and ensures they have more complete and accurate patient information at the time of care. Together, the two companies’ patient record exchange networks represent over 1,000 hospitals and 40,000 clinics that are ready to connect.
Epic and eClinicalWorks are two of seventy organizations that joined Carequality to simplify inter-network connections and reliably accelerate national data sharing for the benefit of healthcare providers, their patients, payers and employers. State and regional HIEs, vendor-based networks, and large integrated delivery networks (IDNs) are all participating in Carequality. Epic and eClinicalWorks’ connection is currently being piloted with Minnesota’s Entira Family Clinics, which utilizes eClinicalWorks’ EHR, and HealthEast Hospital, using Epic’s EHR. Information from both systems is currently accessed on-demand and in real-time with data added into the patient’s progress note within the EHR, making this content part of the ongoing record.
“We provide our patients with the best care possible, necessitating information from all of their care givers,” said Dr. David Thorson of Entira Family Clinics. “Many of our patients are also seen by doctors at HealthEast Hospital, which could have created challenges due to different systems. Instead, we have a seamless view into our patients’ care, regardless of where it occurred. Knowing that eClinicalWorks and Epic, the technology partners for our organizations, have made interoperability a priority is one of the reasons we selected them.”
With the rapid rise of EHR adoption in recent years, industry focus has shifted to interoperability between systems, which allows for better transmission of data related to the care of a patient. eClinicalWorks and Epic have established the ease of securely exchanging patient records under the Carequality framework. Attendees at the HIMSS15 Annual Conference & Exhibition can learn more at the eClinicalWorks booth (#3413) and Epic booth (#1268).
“We are pleased to work with both eClinicalWorks and interested clinical organizations like Entira and HealthEast to further the cause of coordinated care through open, standards based interoperability,” said Carl Dvorak, President of Epic. “By collaborating together with organizations like HealtheWay and Carequality, we can ensure that where ever a patient receives care, they can securely provide their clinicians direct access to their records without concern that their data might be used for other purposes.”
“Technology should enhance care and reflect the realities of how it is delivered,” said Girish Navani, CEO and co-founder of eClinicalWorks. “Patients are seen in multiple settings that employ various systems. Our responsibility as vendors is to make this transition as seamless as possible. The work we have done with Carequality and Epic shows the commitment both our organizations have on what is truly important – giving providers the tools they need to deliver the best care possible to patients.”
