On Tuesday, April 14, Therasa Bell will join leaders from Mental Health Center of Denver and Sante/Encore for Connecting The Unconnected—Making Interoperability A Reality For Underserved Markets. While MHCD and Sante/Encore overcame clinical document exchange challenges, most post-acute organizations are unable to transition and are experiencing substantial impacts as a result, according to an IDC InfoBrief sponsored by Inofile, Clinical Document Exchange: The Need for a Simple, Secure, Cost-Effective Solution, April 2015. As the InfoBrief notes: “Paper based solutions – fax, hand-carry, scanning, and even phone-based methods – still dominate post-acute care provider workflows. These methods are having a real impact on quality of care and the bottom line.”
More than half of the post-acute care respondents to the IDC study experienced loss of business, coding errors and decrease in operational efficiency due to paper-based workflows, while 48% attributed medical errors to this process. The InfoBrief also notes that “the most used methods are also the most unsecure and inefficient.” These challenges are compounded by the amount of patient health information (both digital and paper) regularly processed by these providers, which averages to 180 pages received and another 150 shared with care partners each week.
