WINDSOR, Vt.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LoveYourBrain Foundation announced today that, in honor of Brain Injury Awareness month in March, it will be leading a national yoga and meditation fundraising campaign. Each year, 1.7 million people experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the United States. Often considered an invisible injury, TBI can cause life-altering changes to brain functioning, which can affect memory, self-esteem, motivation, and coordination. These changes can cause many downstream challenges, particularly in maintaining relationships, employment, and overall quality of life.
Every dollar raised will help grow LoveYourBrain Foundation’s flagship yoga program, which supports TBI survivors to participate in affordable yoga and meditation classes tailored to their needs. This program builds off of LoveYourBrain’s experience offering a gentle yoga pilot program for TBI survivors in New Hampshire that was recently evaluated by Dartmouth College. There is increasing recognition of the positive physical and emotional effects of yoga and meditation, particularly through fostering better mind-body connection. Yoga has been an integral part of Kevin Pearce’s rehabilitation from his TBI following a near fatal snowboarding accident in 2009 while training for the Olympics.
“Yoga has the potential to transform the wellbeing of those living with brain injury by improving their ability to strengthen, and reconnect to, their mind and body,” said Kevin Pearce, co-founder of LoveYourBrain Foundation. “It can promote their acceptance of ‘what is’ and help them recognize and appreciate their strengths, rather than focusing on their limitations.”
During Brain Injury Awareness month, LoveYourBrain aims to partner with at least one studio in every state throughout the US to offer a donation-based class. LoveYourBrain will feature all participating studios on its website and social media outlets, which reach more than 200,000 people, and will work with local media to support each studio in raising awareness about TBI. Through this campaign and its yoga program, LoveYourBrain hopes to begin to shift the culture around TBI recovery to build a community that supports healthier, happier lives for those affected by TBI.
