NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Michael R. Bloomberg, Bloomberg LP’s founder and majority shareholder, today announced that Matthew Winkler, the founding editor of Bloomberg News, will assume a new role working directly with him as he re-assumes full-time leadership of the company in 2015. As Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, Winkler will play a vital role at Bloomberg, working directly with Mike Bloomberg on strategic initiatives, conducting high-profile interviews of global newsmakers and bringing his insights and expertise to the most important and market-moving stories.
John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist since 2006, will succeed Winkler as Editor-in-Chief of Bloomberg. He will begin work at Bloomberg’s global headquarters in New York City shortly after the new year.
“Hiring Matt Winkler 25 years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said Michael R. Bloomberg. “He has accomplished more than either of us thought possible back then, and thanks to his exceptional leadership, Bloomberg has set a new standard for journalistic excellence. His experience will be enormously beneficial to me as I re-assume full-time leadership of the company.
“There is no one better qualified to build on Matt’s legacy than John Micklethwait. He has done an extraordinary job at The Economist, and as one of the world’s smartest thinkers on the forces of globalization, he is a perfect fit for Bloomberg. We are thrilled that he will be joining our leadership team.”
After joining Bloomberg in 1990, Winkler built a global news organization that now includes more than 2,400 reporters and editors who are producing 5,000 daily stories from more than 150 bureaus around the world. His eye for market-moving stories, commitment to integrity in reporting, passion for clear writing, and insistence on speed are the hallmarks of Bloomberg News. Under his strong leadership, Bloomberg News has received more than 800 awards and is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. Winkler is co-author of Bloomberg by Bloomberg and author of The Bloomberg Way: A Guide for Reporters and Editors.
Micklethwait has led The Economist into the digital age while expanding its readership and enhancing its reputation. Micklethwait joined The Economist as a finance correspondent in 1987 after beginning his career in banking at Chase Manhattan. Prior to becoming Editor-in-Chief, he was the newspaper's Business editor and United States editor. Micklethwait has appeared on radio and television around the world and co-authored five books, most recently The Fourth Revolution: The Global Race to Reinvent the State. He was named Editors' Editor by the British Society of Magazine Editors in 2010.
At Bloomberg, he will join the company’s senior leadership team, overseeing editorial content across all Bloomberg platforms, including its news, newsletters, magazines, opinion, television, radio and digital properties, as well as its research services, including Bloomberg Intelligence and Bloomberg Brief. This will unite all of Bloomberg’s editorial content, which has expanded and diversified rapidly in recent years, and allow for greater collaboration and coordination across the company. He will work closely with Justin Smith, CEO of the Bloomberg Media Group, who will continue to report directly to Mike Bloomberg on all business and strategy matters across Bloomberg’s diverse media properties.
