WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WGL (NYSE: WGL) and its subsidiary, Washington Gas have partnered with the Washington Wizards for the Greening of Verizon Center for every home game during the 2014-15 season. Games played on Nov. 15, Dec. 5 and Jan. 7 will highlight the partnership.
“We are thrilled to partner with WGL and Washington Gas to help green the Verizon Center and assist us in our responsible and sustainable practices,” said David Touhey, Verizon Center senior vice president & general manager. “Sustainability is an important issue and we are always looking for ways to enhance our support of the environment.”
WGL will be donating 410 WGES CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets to counterbalance the carbon dioxide emissions for lighting, heating/cooling, concession cooking as well as solid waste from all Wizards home games at the Verizon Center during the 2014-15 season. Offsetting 410 tons of carbon dioxide emissions is equivalent to:
- Avoiding the consumption of over 46,000 gallons of gasoline, or
- Planting over 10,500 tree seedlings that grow for 10 years.
"WGL clearly understands its responsibility as a corporate citizen, not only by playing an integral role in the betterment of the communities we serve, but also as stalwart stewards for a cleaner environment," said Dr. Louis J. Hutchinson, III, chief revenue officer for WGL. "We are excited to be 'Greening' every Wizards game for the 2014-2015 season, and this is just the first of many initiatives that WGL is undertaking that will illustrate and prove our commitment to making our region and world a better place in which to live."
As part of this initiative, WGL has also entered a Public-Private Partnership between WGL, Restore Together, Inc., and the Wizards. Local nonprofit organizations supported by this partnership include: Central Union Mission; New Hope Housing; The ARC; and G.I.R.L. Inc.
