SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Belkin International, creator of the WeMo home automation ecosystem, today announced an expansion of its Seattle-based software group and the creation of a new research and development team. Dubbed WeMo Labs, the expanded team will work closely with the University of Washington and focus largely on developing sensing and machine learning technologies for the rapidly growing Internet of Things market.
Though headquartered in Los Angeles, Belkin has maintained a strong connection with the Pacific Northwest in recent years. In 2013 it acquired a small local software team through the purchase of wireless networking company Linksys and in 2010 it acquired Seattle tech start-up Zensi. Zensi’s energy and water sensing technology, based on research from current University of Washington professor Shwetak Patel, spurred the creation of WeMo and helped pivot Belkin into the connected home space.
“With a thriving tech industry and an immense talent pool surrounding UW’s world-renowned computer science & engineering and electrical engineering programs, Seattle is ground zero for recruiting the top data scientists, software engineers, and developers in the country,” said Patel, who also serves as Belkin’s Chief Scientist. “WeMo Labs will continue to benefit from a long-standing relationship with the Ubicomp Research Lab and other UW organizations such as the eScience Institute.”
“Establishing a larger presence in Seattle and collaborating with the University of Washington is a direct investment in the future of WeMo,” said Chet Pipkin, founder and CEO of Belkin. “We’re looking for this team to help us fast track groundbreaking technologies from the lab to the marketplace, keeping WeMo at the forefront of the Internet of Things.”
WeMo Labs is currently hiring for a number of positions and looks to expand further in the near future. To learn more, visit the Belkin careers website.
