HIAWATHA, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Paying it forward can pay off in more ways than one.
That’s the message for an Iowa couple who famously left a $100 tip for an overworked waiter at a Cedar Rapids sushi restaurant. As part of a year-long program to recognize and encourage the Pay it Forward spirit, Chicken of the Sea surprised them with $10,000 to enable them to continue their cycle of good.
Steven and Makenzie Schultz were presented with an oversized $10,000 check at their home today in Hiawatha, Iowa. They vowed to use the money to Pay it Forward to others.
The award is the last of 100 “Gratitude Awards” presented by the seafood brand in 2014 to commemorate its 100th anniversary. In all, the Chicken of the 100 Years of Good initiative is investing $1 million in selfless individuals and grassroots organizations nationwide that are bringing good to their communities.
“We’ve been holding the last of our 100 Gratitude Awards for those individuals or organizations that perfectly demonstrate the selfless, Pay it Forward spirit of the program,” said David Roszmann, COO of Chicken of the Sea. “We definitely think we’ve found it in the Schultzs.”
According to Roszmann, the 99 Gratitude Award recipients identified to date span the country and spectrum of grassroots community work – from providing hospital beds in Phoenix and teen mentoring services in Atlanta to teaching inner-city children to swim in Detroit.
