TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MedCurrent Corporation, a leading provider of clinical decision support solutions, today announced that Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LADHS), the 2nd largest municipal health system in the U.S., has chosen MedCurrent’s OrderRight™ Radiology Decision Support system to ensure appropriate ordering of advanced medical imaging.
LADHS operates four public hospitals; 16 local health clinics; one multi-service ambulatory care center; and provides services to over 800,000 patients in Los Angeles County. LADHS has recently purchased a Cerner Millennium™ EMR system and will be including OrderRight with their Millennium rollout. As a deeply integrated system, OrderRight will provide optimal workflow for their ordering clinicians, and is designed to enhance patient care planning and treatment, reduce inappropriate healthcare utilization, and lower costs.
“MedCurrent’s OrderRight encompasses the workflow and clinical depth that best fits our system for today and tomorrow,” said Rob Bart, M.D., LADHS Chief Medical Information Officer. “In particular, its seamless integration into our Cerner Millennium electronic medical record system will ensure that adoption by our providers will be accelerated. It’s fast and easy for ordering physicians and has powerful data base capabilities which we will need going forward. We made the decision to utilize clinical decision support in advance of a recently passed law that requires it to ensure quality care and to appropriately manage our costs,” noted Bart.
The Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) of 2014 that requires physicians to utilize clinical decision support mandates that starting January 1, 2017, physicians ordering advanced diagnostic imaging exams (CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and PET) must consult government-approved, evidence-based appropriate-use criteria, through the use of a CDS system.
OrderRight incorporates the ACR Select™ appropriateness criteria in its system. For localization of rules, OrderRight’s patent-pending Rule Authoring Studio provides administrative tools that allow each provider organization to modify, customize and add appropriateness rules to meet their local needs and standards of practice. With this feature, new rules and criteria can easily be created and clinically tested for consideration before being added into their system’s rule set. OrderRight’s Data Analytics™, a module that provides a view of ordering behaviors and rule compliance from various macro and micro levels, enhances the organization’s ability to ensure clinically-appropriate ordering and support appropriate medical review and action.
“We are honored that LADHS chose MedCurrent OrderRight for their decision support solution,” said Steve Herman, MD, MedCurrent’s founder and Chief Medical Officer. “We look forward to working with Dr. Bart and the thousands of providers who will be incorporating clinical decision support into their decision-making.”
