Freescale Base Station-on-Chip Technology Powers Airvana OneCell LTE Enterprise Small Cell Solution

Leading provider of small cell solutions utilizes Freescale QorIQ Qonverge SoCs to deliver an innovative, multi-operator small cell system

Super Mobility Week 2014

LAS VEGAS--()--(Super Mobility Week) – To help with the growing use of LTE services throughout enterprises and public spaces, Airvana, a leading provider of small cell solutions, has selected the combination of Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge B4860 and BSC9131 baseband SoCs to power its OneCellTM system. OneCell is the world’s first multi-operator small cell solution. OneCell’s single cell architecture eliminates handovers and inter-cell interference issues, which improves user experience and simplifies deployment compared to traditional standalone small cells.

Based on cloud RAN principles, the OneCell solution utilizes a Baseband Controller and multiple Radio Points to form a single super-cell for consistently high quality LTE service within buildings - including offices, shopping centers and airports. The OneCell system is deployed over standard enterprise Ethernet Local Area Networks (LANs) and supports plug-and-play setup, thereby dramatically reducing the cost of cabling, network equipment and installation services.

Freescale’s powerful QorIQ Qonverge B4860 and BSC9131 processors, combined with its operator-proven VortiQa layer 1 software, provide not only the open programmability needed to develop the innovative OneCell solution, but also the flexibility and processing headroom to provision for LTE-Advanced and other features through field software upgrades.

“Investment protection is critical for enterprise-class small cell solutions,” said Rod Gatehouse, vice president of marketing and business development for Airvana. “The flexibility and scalability of Freescale’s Qonverge SoC portfolio, combined with their VortiQa layer 1 software, has allowed us to create a unique system solution that will support LTE-Advanced technologies and emerging enterprise and operator requirements.”

QorIQ Qonverge BSC9131 baseband processors are deployed in OneCell access points. The BSC9131 is a highly integrated SoC targeting small cell base stations, enterprise VoIP, smart grid control, and industrial applications. The high-performance device handles a broad range of DSP functions with complementary acceleration and multicore processing. The QorIQ Qonverge B4860 SoC is used in Airvana’s controller and combines fully programmable Power Architecture® CPU cores, StarCore DSP cores, and a powerful baseband acceleration platform to provide cost-effective, best-in-class performance and connectivity. The device is ideally suited to meet the demands of wireless operators for high capacities and high throughputs in LTE, LTE-Advanced and WCDMA base stations.

“Freescale is pleased to play a critical enabling role in a product that is garnering admiration throughout the industry,” said Tareq Bustami, vice president and general manager of product management for Freescale’s Digital Networking Group. “Airvana’s OneCell solution represents an innovative application of the industry’s most advanced base station SoC family from Freescale. Airvana’s creativity and industry-leading performance with Freescale’s macro and small cell technology is a winning combination.”
