Shippable ‘Ships’ a New Platform to Continuously Deliver Docker-ized Applications

Shippable 2.0 helps accelerate enterprise adoption of Docker containers and delivery of code in enterprise software development lifecycle

SEATTLE--()--Shippable, a Seattle-based startup focused on increasing developer efficiency, today announced its version 2.0 release – a new enterprise-grade delivery platform that helps software teams innovate faster by docker-izing their workflows and automating application lifecycles from code to production. The new platform is the first for containerized workflows and is engineered to leverage Docker containers to the fullest, increasing agility in the software development lifecycle (SDLC). Its rich feature set includes on-demand, containerized dev/test environments that are exact replicas of the production environment, a continuous delivery pipeline for application containers, and versioning of application containers with a one-click upgrade or rollback to any version.

“Container-based development is becoming essential for DevOps teams because it enables application development to move more quickly and efficiently,” said Al Hilwa, program director, application development software, IDC. “Enterprises adopting agile practices and seeking options for continuous development and delivery will find that workflow containerization solutions like Shippable will ultimately lead to better software quality.”

Shippable’s containerized, instant dev/test labs can help reduce an organization’s cloud footprint by more than 50 percent. With Shippable, each developer’s code change is tested on a personal, dedicated environment that spins up in seconds and accurately replicates production topology. This approach helps detect errors immediately and reduces reliance on weekly ‘test passes’ to find tricky topology related issues, increasing developer efficiency by reducing the amount of time taken to rework code and fix bugs as a result. Developers will avoid the frustration and extra time spent fixing ‘works on my machine’ bugs.

Shippable’s continuous delivery pipeline includes continuous integration and deployment of containerized applications. This pipeline is fully integrated with Docker Hub for container management and with Chef and Puppet for teams wishing to deploy to hypervisors in production. Shippable is also partnering with Google to support deployment of docker-ized applications to any cloud supported by Google’s open source project – Kubernetes.

“Docker is disrupting the virtualization space and enterprises are fast recognizing the value of containerizing their workflows. We believe that the first wave of adoption will be in dev and test workflows, and Shippable is focused on helping enterprises make that transformation,” said Avi Cavale, co-founder and CEO of Shippable. “However, customers can use Shippable even if they have no plans to adopt containers into their workflow since Shippable is fully compatible with hypervisors and still delivers its continuous delivery platform to enable agile software development.”

Shippable’s platform is available in a couple of flavors:

  • Hosted service, where containers and orchestration are both hosted on Shippable.
  • Dedicated Hosts, where orchestration is through the hosted service, but the containers run on customers’ host machines, which can be behind the firewall if needed. This gives customers the benefits of a single tenant build system without the complexity.

A third option – an on-premise solution which customers can self-host – is currently in private beta.

Shippable’s hosted continuous delivery platform currently has more than 450 businesses and more than 10,000 individual customers. The service runs over 8,000 containers and is one of the largest deployments of Docker in production. The containerized architecture is very cost effective to run at a large scale, and Shippable passes on these savings to customers, with a free plan offering unlimited builds for public and private repositories.

Availability and Pricing

Shippable is available immediately in tiered, monthly software-as-a-service (SaaS) options. The hosted multi-tenant service is free for unlimited builds of public and private repositories. Paid plans starting at $12/year include dedicated hosts and more parallelization of builds. For more information about Shippable or to sign up for a demo, visit www.shippable.com.
