WILLIAMSBURG, Va.--()--Voting in Virginia’s Top Ten Endangered Artifacts (www.vatop10artifacts.org) campaign is underway now through August 23, and the Muscarelle Museum of Art (www.wm.edu/muscarelle) at the College of William & Mary has nominated a 17th century Portrait of Robert Bolling (1646-1709) for this competition.

The campaign from the Virginia Association of Museums is designed to create awareness of the importance of preserving artifacts in care at museums, libraries and archives throughout the Commonwealth and in the District of Columbia.

Collecting institutions from across Virginia and the District of Columbia have nominated items that they believe tell a significant story and deserve to be recognized on this prestigious “Top 10 List.” These objects are in urgent need of professional conservation. The campaign showcases the importance of Virginia’s diverse history, heritage and culture and the role that artifacts play in telling those stories.

The Top 10 honorees, as well as a “People’s Choice” honoree, will be announced September 9. The panel will consider the public voting as they make their final selections.

Aaron De Groft, director and CEO of the Muscarelle Museum of Art, has pointed out that conservation is a vital component of the museum’s mission by stating that “Virginia’s Top 10 campaign offers an interactive opportunity for supporters of Muscarelle Museum of Art to become engaged in bringing the importance of this mission into the public spotlight.”

Virginia’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts is a program of the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM). VAM is the resource network of the Virginia and Washington DC museum community, providing education, technical assistance, and advocacy.
