Design Workshop Promotes Aspen, CO Office Principal Mike Albert to Shareholder

ASPEN, Colo.--()--Design Workshop, an international landscape architecture, planning, and urban design firm with offices and work spanning the globe, is pleased to announce the promotion of Mike Albert to Shareholder.

Mike joined Design Workshop in 2006, after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Oklahoma State University—noted as a Top Fifteen University-Wide Graduating Senior. Within 30 months of joining Design Workshop, Mike became a licensed landscape architect, a LEED® Accredited Professional and a Construction Document Technologist, and was promoted to Associate and became Operations Manager of the Aspen office. Managing a diverse range of planning and design projects, Mike gained notable experience practicing across a variety of scales, including private residential gardens, multi-family affordable housing, urban parks and streetscapes, resort and tourism planning, master-planned communities and urban redevelopment strategies. Notable projects include the Beaver Creek Resort Legacy Project, Snowmass Mall Redevelopment, Double Bar X Ranch, the Guesthouse at Roaring River Ranch, the Big Darby Parks and Open Space Plan and the Isla Palenque Ecotourism Resort. Selected project work received recognition at the state and national levels, including a National ASLA Award in Analysis & Planning and the Colorado ASLA President’s Award of Excellence for Isla Palenque. Commitment to academia was exemplified in his establishment of a leadership scholarship at Oklahoma State University, his participation on its Landscape Architecture Professional Advisory Council, and serving as Project Manager of Design Workshop’s 2008 Design Week at Kansas State University.

From 2011-2013, Mike pursued a Masters in Landscape Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, graduating with honors. His research concentrated on transformative strategies for an abandoned waterfront brownfield in Gothenburg, Sweden; an agro-tourism park adjacent to the Deere & Company World Headquarters in Moline, Illinois; and an urban revitalization planning study in Jerusalem, Israel—which received the 2013 Colorado ASLA President’s Award in Planning. During graduate school, Mike was part of the winning collaborations for the prestigious National ULI/Hines Urban Design Competition, the Designing Action International Competition and the Boston Affordable Housing Competition.

In 2013, Mike returned to the Aspen office of Design Workshop and was promoted to Principal. Recently named a Top 5 Designer Under 40 by Colorado Homes & Lifestyles Magazine, he has played a significant role in business development and design leadership. Mike’s current work includes resort planning projects in Aspen, Teton Village and Cabo San Lucas; residential garden commissions in Aspen, Snowmass, Park City, Big Sky and Washington, D.C.; and urban design and park projects in Western Colorado and Calgary. Mike currently serves on the Executive Board of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, the National ASLA Honors and Awards Advisory Committee and the National Annual Meeting Education Advisory Committee. An active member of the Aspen community, Mike is a member of the Aspen Institute’s Vanguard Program and the Aspen Art Museum Contemporaries. This November, Mike will receive the ASLA National Student Honor Award in Residential Design for his adaptive reuse and affordable housing proposal in Boston, Massachusetts.

“Mike exemplifies how disciplined and enthusiastic pursuit of excellence leads to career advancement within Design Workshop. He has proven from the very beginning his commitment to award-winning work and quality construction. He has broadened his skills through graduate school, while developing an expanded view of the profession through a wide range of life experiences and travel. He has diligently pursued and completed Design Workshop’s 'Five Year Plan.' He has been a fearless marketer and built strong relationships with long-term clients. His participation on the board of The Cultural Landscape Foundation demonstrates his leadership on a national level. We are pleased to recognize Mike as a key part of the future leadership that will ensure the success of Design Workshop for years to come.”
