Kochava Takes Bold Privacy Stand in Support of Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act

On the anniversary of updated child online privacy law, Kochava leads the mobile advertising industry by building child privacy protections for mobile apps and games into its mobile measurement and attribution platform

  • July 1st, 2014 marks the one-year anniversary of the FTC’s update to the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA), expanding its coverage to mobile apps and games.
  • Kochava is taking a stand in support of child privacy by building COPPA compliance tools into its platform and making them available to its hundreds of customers free of charge.
  • AgeCheq helps Kochava clients easily comply with COPPA using what the FTC refers to as a “common mechanism” for parental verification, disclosure and approval.
  • Mobile apps and games using Kochava for measurement and attribution can now use the AgeCheq service for simple COPPA compliance directly from the Kochava dashboard.

SANDPOINT, Idaho--()--Kochava (www.kochava.com), the mobile attribution, analytics and optimization company, today announced its support for the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA) with its commitment to provide the AgeCheq COPPA compliance services (www.AgeCheq.com) to its growing list of large global brands, agencies and games. Kochava has integrated the AgeCheq COPPA compliance service into its mobile measurement and attribution platform, making AgeCheq’s COPPA compliance tools available for free to all Kochava customers via the single Kochava Dashboard.

Kochava already provides advertisers a single view into the performance metrics of all their media buys, and removes integration challenges through the single, universal Kochava buy-side SDK. With the addition of the AgeCheq tools to the Kochava platform mobile app and game, publishers who may have children under 13 in their audience can easily comply with COPPA privacy regulations by using the SDK to add a few lines of code to their game. Existing apps and games already using Kochava for measurement and attribution can be updated using the AgeCheq service, tested and re-posted to the app stores within a single day.

Created during the Clinton administration and enacted in 2000, COPPA was passed to protect children under the age of 13 as they used the Internet. With the meteoric rise of mobile devices and the new privacy issues that accompanied them, COPPA was revised in 2012 to cover mobile apps and games. The revised law went into effect on July 1, 2013.

A December 2012 FTC study on mobile apps for kids stated that most mobile app developers failed to meet the original COPPA compliance standards. The study also found many mobile apps continue to share personal information, such as device ID, geolocation and phone numbers, with third parties without disclosure to parents. Under the law, developers who do not comply with COPPA are subject to fines of up to $16,000 per affected child, and up to 20 years of annual privacy audits.

“Since our founding, Kochava has taken an unwavering stance on the importance of data privacy,” said Charles Manning, Kochava CEO. “We’ve always said our customers’ data belongs to them, and we’ll never share it, use it, or leverage it in any way. Kochava has set the bar for data privacy best practices in the mobile measurement and attribution industry, and with the addition of AgeCheq’s COPPA compliance tools to our platform we are further extending our commitment to data privacy, both for our customers and the end users who enjoy their games and apps.”

The basic AgeCheq service, which includes unlimited usage, is provided free of charge to all Kochava customers and can be accessed directly via the Kochava dashboard. For publishers with millions of monthly users, AgeCheq offers a paid “Pro” service that provides useful analytics on onboarding, player usage and disclosure page views, as well as transition controls. AgeCheq supports all of the major game development environments, including native iOS, native Android, HTML5, Unity, and Corona.

“With hundreds of mobile app and game developers worldwide and many of the top brands in the app stores, Kochava has earned a reputation as the gold standard for measurement while adhering to the highest data privacy standards,” said Roy Smith, AgeCheq CEO. “Mobile apps and games are required to comply with child privacy laws, however many do not have the resources to create and legally vet a viable compliance solution. By building AgeCheq’s COPPA compliance tools into the Kochava platform Kochava is taking a bold step to help its customers get into compliance before the big fines are handed down by the FTC.”
