CMMI Institute Helps Organizations Across All Industries Maximize the Value of Their Data Assets

Business and Government Adopting Data Management Maturity Model Report a Shared Vision and Renewed Energy in their Data Management Programs

Data Governance and Information Quality Conference

SAN DIEGO--()--CMMI® Institute today announced that organizations across industries are adopting its Data Management Maturity (DMM)™ model to evaluate and improve their enterprise data management practices. Companies varying from one of the largest software companies in the world to a leader in networking as well as financial firms, large aerospace firms, and government agencies have realized significant business benefits from the use of the DMM model. When DMM-based process improvements are implemented, organizations can realize significant benefits such as controlling costs through the use of reliable and accurate data, mitigating risk, and increasing transparency and data access for more strategic and informed business decisions.

“Businesses must make the best and smartest use of today’s vast amount of data generated to drive strategic insights that lead to competitive advantage,” said Kirk Botula, CEO of CMMI Institute. “To accomplish this, organizations need to apply a collaborative approach to optimizing their data assets. The strength of the DMM model is that it delivers the perfect catalyst for this type of data process improvement across business lines— and this results in executives being able to make better and faster decisions using a strategic view of their data.”

The DMM model, first announced in May 2014, was developed using the principles and structure of CMMI Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®)—a proven approach to performance improvement and the gold standard for software and systems development for more than 20 years. The DMM model helps organizations become more proficient in managing critical data assets to improve operations, enable analytics and gain competitive advantage.

A key goal of the DMM model is to represent and support data professionals across all organizations that need to realize high value from their data assets. By working with businesses, government and data management associations, CMMI Institute and DMM sponsors have garnered critical insight and strong support from over 100 data management professionals representing 45 different organizations that contributed to the development of the model.

According to Sue Geuens, President of DAMA International, “The Board of Directors and Advisors of DAMA International believe the DMM model is a big step in the right direction and are gratified that data is truly becoming the corporate asset that we, the Data Management Profession, have known about for so many years.”

Data Management Maturity Model Sponsors:

Booz Allen Hamilton: “This is a critical period for effective data management because of the growth of data and the risk and opportunities this presents. Booz Allen has long recognized the need for a model that can assist organizations in their data management. The DMM model effectively addresses this need. As a user of CMMI with client organizations, Booz Allen has found that having DMM based on the CMMI facilitates the implementation and effectiveness of data management practices.” - Leslie DiFonzo, Senior Vice President, Booz Allen Hamilton

Lockheed Martin: “As organizations have become more dependent on data quality, integrity, and governance, a model to guide best practices in the data management discipline has become critical. The DMM model provides organizations with a focused approach to managing the large amount of data today's organizations generate. The model’s architecture allows the implementer to identify and fill the gaps existing in data management, and delivers a “right-sized approach” that can be used across an organization’s business data as well as data within individual projects specific to individual customers.” - Mary Lynn Penn, Director of Enterprise Integration, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions

Microsoft Corporation: “The DMM model has accelerated Microsoft’s journey to be a real-time enterprise, and is an effective language to align our IT and businesses goals. The recommendations provided by the CMMI Institute and the DMM model were actionable and scalable for our organization, and enabled quick assessments that lead to immediate execution.” - Luisa Recalcati, Enterprise Architect, Microsoft Corporation

Kingland Systems Corporation: “The DMM model provides the best available tool for organizations to objectively evaluate where they stand against practices that their peers have identified as necessary to do well at data management. It transcends any one industry, and has proven to be a valuable asset to anyone that has to manage data or improve data management practices within their organization.” - Jeff Gorball, Managing Director, Kingland Systems Corporation

Some of the other organizations who have realized actionable acceleration of their data management programs using the DMM model include Fannie Mae, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and the Federal Reserve System Statistics Function.

CMMI Institute will showcase the results achieved by early adopters of the DMM model at the Data Governance and Information Quality Conference on June 23 -27, 2014 in San Diego, CA, where attendees will learn how the DMM model can transform their data management program to support better decision making and business alignment across functions and lines of business.
