PHOENIX--()--In honor of Memorial Day this weekend, today more than 50 volunteers from University of Phoenix, a subsidiary of Apollo Education Group (Nasdaq: APOL), planted 10,000 flags on the lawn of the University’s Phoenix office. The flag display reads “FREEDOM IS NEVER FREE” and represents a meaningful symbol of appreciation to those service members who sacrificed their lives for our country’s freedom. Prior to Memorial Day, the flags will be removed and donated to local veteran cemeteries.

“This Memorial Day, University of Phoenix is proud to honor fallen service members by saluting the men and women who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom,” said University of Phoenix Military Relations Vice President and retired U.S. Army Colonel Garland Williams. “The University is proud to show our appreciation today through this flag demonstration, and to show our appreciation all year long by removing barriers to help our nation’s service members, their families and veterans complete their education goals.”

In conjunction with the Memorial Day flag ceremony, University of Phoenix will encourage donations to the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is a lifeline for deployed service members, allowing them to communicate to loved ones back home during emergencies and provide social services, emergency travel, financial assistance and mental health support for returning service members and their families. The public can make a donation to the Red Cross by visiting http://www.redcross.org/cm/uphoenix-pub.

“The American Red Cross is incredibly honored to be part of University of Phoenix’s Memorial Day Tribute saluting America’s military,” said David Emerson, CEO of the American Red Cross Phoenix Region. “While the American Red Cross was born on the battlefield, the Red Cross now serves members of the Armed Forces and their families from the time they enter the military throughout active duty and into their years as veterans.”

Additionally, the public is invited to visit University of Phoenix’s Military Tribute Wall to post a virtual message showing appreciation of service to a current active-duty service member, a veteran or retiree who has previously served, or to someone who paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting the nation’s freedom. University of Phoenix’s Military Tribute Wall can be found by visiting http://phoenixpatriotmagazine.com/memorial-day-tribute.
