One in Five Mobile Gamers Would Rather Give up Sex than Mobile Games for a Week

PlayPhone Survey Also Suggests Latinos Represent the Next Growth Phase for Mobile Gaming Monetization

SAN MATEO, Calif.--()--PlayPhone, Inc., a global leader in mobile social gaming, today announced results from Part II of its landmark Mobile Gaming Chronicles, a sweeping survey of more than 1,000 Americans who play games on smartphones and tablets. Part II sought to put additional contours around groups identified in Part I as most likely to pay for their mobile gaming experience – along with some of the cultural behaviors that accompany the phenomenon of mobile gaming today.

First off, 57 percent of Latinos said they would be willing to pay $5 or more for a monthly game subscription that would provide them a complete gaming experience (access to games, game levels and in-game items) compared to only 37% of all Americans. Other notable segments of those that would pay $5 or more for a monthly game subscription are:

  • Men – but only slightly more than women at 54 percent of men vs. 46 percent of women
  • 25 to 29 year olds – 49 percent of this age group stated their likelihood to spend - the highest of any age group
  • Self-professed ‘mobile gamers’ – 53 percent of this group is likely to spend heavily
  • Mobile gamers who play for three to five hours per day – 56 percent of this group is also likely to spend heavily

“As mobile gaming continues to evolve, it’s important we examine the ways in which large groups of payers might diverge from large groups of players,” said Anders Evju, CMO of PlayPhone. “Data from Part II of PlayPhone’s Mobile Gaming chronicles allows us to dig deeper into the 25 to 39 year-old 'biggest spender group' revealed in Part I and to begin profiling strong up-and-coming monetization targets.”

The survey also shed light on habits of smartphone and tablet gamers who play for at least one hour per day. PlayPhone found that more than half (56 percent) of this group proclaim themselves addicted to mobile gaming, as do more than two thirds (71 percent) who say they play at least three hours a day. Other findings for those who play more than one hour per day reveal their passion for mobile gaming:

  • More than two-thirds (68 percent) frequently or occasionally sacrifice sleep on a non-work night to finish playing a mobile game -- and 58 percent on a work night
  • About half (49 percent) play mobile games at work, with close to a quarter (22 percent) formally blocking times on their calendar to play mobile games
    • Among gamers who play at least three hours per day, 60 percent frequently or occasionally play games at work, and 33 percent block times on their calendar to play mobile games.
  • A surprising 17 percent admit to frequently or occasionally playing mobile games while behind the wheel
    • Among those who play at least three hours a day, that number jumps to 28 percent

Finally, one-in-five (20 percent) say they would rather give up sex than mobile games for a week (along with 29 percent of those who play at least three hours per day).

“Just as we seek to reveal emerging trends in mobile gaming monetization, we feel it’s essential to investigate behaviors that define heavy spenders,” Evju continued. “It furthers our goals of maximizing value for our game developer and operator partners and enables us to continue to deliver an optimal social gaming experience.”
