MSCI Annual Meeting Program Emphasizes Role of Policy on Metals Industry Growth

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--()--In his remarks to the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) membership at its annual meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz., President and CEO M. Robert Weidner, III, emphasized the importance of November’s elections. “In a time when our country’s economy is only expected to grow at a minimal pace, it is extremely important for us to understand where the candidates stand on legislative issues. Many regulations and taxations are placing an undue burden on the industry and prohibiting growth,” explained Weidner.

“While there are many things that our individual member companies can and should do to remain competitive in this global economy, it is the role of government to insure that our companies compete on a level playing field,” he said. “Elections matter and public policies have both intended and unintended consequences.”

David H. Hannah, MSCI Chairman and Chairman and CEO of Reliance Steel & Aluminum commented, “The industrial metals supply chain is essential to the underlying manufacturing economy in North America. In light of the confluence of several forces: globalization, technology, consolidation, changing demographics and an increased role of government in our businesses, it is imperative that our entire membership possess both an internal commitment to continuous improvement and an external awareness that what got us here isn’t going to necessarily get us to where we want to be in the years ahead. Simply doing what we’ve always done better, faster, more consistently won’t be enough for sustainable competitive advantage. MSCI has a serious role to play in helping our members’ process and understand the implications of these factors.”

Founded in 1909, the Metals Service Center Institute, based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has nearly 400 member companies operating from more than 1,500 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and throughout the world. A study by John Dunham Associates shows the American metals industry accounts for nearly 2.5 million jobs and the economic contribution of the industry is more than $552 billion — or more than 3.5% of the nation’s gross domestic product.
