BEAVERTON, Ore.--()--The RVU Alliance, which develops and promotes the RVU® Remote User Interface (RUI) standard, today announced a major feature expansion with the launch of the RVU Certification program for Ultra High Definition devices, along with a significant expansion of the RVU membership roster.

RVU is a client/server protocol which allows a central server to provide a consistent User Interface and features to compatible CE devices, such as Smart TVs, gaming platforms, and thin client devices, giving a user the same UI and DVR experience at every connected device in the home, but without the need for a separate set-top box. The RVU certification program has been in place since 2012, certifying products from Humax, Pace, Technicolor, Samsung and Sony. To date there are over 20 million RVU compliant TV and thin client set-top boxes deployed in the U.S. alone, with expansion into Latin America starting in mid 2014. The program has now expanded to include certification for 4K UHD clients, building on the RVU 2.0 standard ratified last year which is based on HTML-5 Canvas

The RVU Alliance also announced new members: Panasonic, Sharp and Wistron NeWeb Corporation that have joined other TV manufacturers, payTV operators and technology peers in developing and promoting the RVU standard.

“We are very pleased to continue to see new members join the expanding RVU Alliance,” said Henry Derovanessian, president of the RVU Alliance Board of Directors and senior vice president of Engineering at DIRECTV. “The number of RVU compliant platforms continues to grow and the ecosystem is expanding into Latin America clearly demonstrating the success of the Alliance. As the industry evolves to 4K UHD it is essential to have key partners developing solutions together and we look forward to seeing 4K UHD products supporting the RVU standard very soon.”

RVU is based on the foundations of DLNA, is part of the DLNA guidelines, and allows streaming of video via secured connections from a central server to compatible CE devices. RVU also allows the server to export the same consistent User Interface (UI) and DVR features across all connected client platforms, effectively providing a DVR set-top box experience directly on a TV, but without the need for a set-top box. About RVU Alliance

RVU is a client/server-based technology that allows the television viewer to experience a consistent, pixel accurate server-generated user interface on various consumer electronics devices. The RVU specification uses widely implemented UPnP and DLNA technologies to enable a gateway device such as an advanced set-top box to work with non-proprietary client devices such as connected TVs, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes. The specification is maintained by the RVU Alliance, whose Founding Promoter members include Broadcom, Cisco, DIRECTV and Samsung, which facilitates the adoption of an open standard technology that allows service providers to expand their unique UI and user experience onto standard consumer devices without the need for proprietary equipment. Based on the foundations of UPnP and DLNA, RVU is also available via the DLNA premium content guidelines. For more information on the RVU Alliance please visit www.rvualliance.org.

The RVU Alliance is an Oregon-based non-profit mutual benefit corporation formed to develop a specification for the RVU technology including a full-featured “pixel accurate” Remote User Interface (RUI). Current Promoter members include DIRECTV Latin America, Entropic, Huawei, Humax, JetHead Development, Pace, Sky Brasil, ST Microelectronics, Technicolor and Toshiba.
