Transit Wireless and AT&T Expand Deal to Bring Wireless Service to More Underground Subway Stations in New York

NEW YORK--()--Transit Wireless and AT&T today announced that the companies have expanded their contract to bring AT&T’s wireless voice and data service to as many as 242 additional underground New York City subway stations on Transit Wireless’ state-of-the-art wireless network. AT&T service is currently available in 30 stations in mid-town Manhattan from Phase 1 of the project as well as six from the Initial Build in Chelsea.

“AT&T has been a valued partner in making this project a reality since the very beginning,” said William A. Bayne Jr., CEO of Transit Wireless. “By extending their commitment throughout the full build of this project, AT&T is helping ensure dependable, high-speed wireless coverage in the subway system for all their customers in New York and future innovations that improve the rider experience for years to come.”

AT&T is in the process of installing equipment in Transit Wireless’ secure Base Station Hotel facilities to bring 3G and 4G LTE service to Phase 2 of the project, which comprises 40 stations – 11 stations in mid-town Manhattan, including Grand Central Terminal, 34th St. Herald Square and Bryant Park and all 29 underground stations in the borough of Queens. The entire Phase Two build-out is expected to be completed by this summer.

“New Yorkers want to be connected to the things that matter to them most. That’s why AT&T was one of the first providers to offer our customers access to wireless connectivity in the New York subway system,” said Thomas DeVito, vice president and general manager. “This network extension will allow AT&T to continue to deliver a best in class voice and 4G LTE data experience for our customers underground beyond the 36 stations where it is available today.”

“Bringing wireless service into the New York City subway has been a big step forward for our customers, and we’re pleased that even more of them will be able to take advantage of it,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast. “The ability to make and receive phone calls underground is an important improvement for safety and security as well as convenience, and our customers will certainly appreciate it.”

Adding additional wireless service to the Transit Wireless network gives millions more New Yorkers and visitors the ability to dial 911 in an emergency, while underground in the subway station and on platforms. A critical security improvement, E911 allows dispatchers to know when a call is being placed from an underground platform and direct emergency personnel to the approximate location where the call was made.
