PANAMA CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Oneworld Cockpit Crew Coalition (OCCC) hosted representatives of the WestJet Professional Pilots Association (WPPA) at the OCCC’s meeting this week in Panama City, Panama. The leadership of the OCCC released the following related statement:
“The OCCC endorses the WPPA’s desire to seek a professional, collaborative approach to pilot representation at WestJet, including legal accreditation. We stand ready and willing to support such efforts internationally.
“The OCCC believes that the legal rights afforded pilots associations as a trade union empowers pilot representatives with a recognized platform to act as a contributing trade association. It is crucial for professional pilot associations to work collaboratively with their airline in an effort to support growth and sustainability, much as pilots in WestJet have done to date. However, the difference between consultation and proper negotiation backed by contractual rights must not be underestimated.
“In an airline industry characterized by ever-increasing consolidation, it is essential for pilot representatives to expand their network of relationships with other professional pilot associations. By doing so, we can learn and adapt more quickly to the changing industry by sharing information and resources. The member pilot associations of the OCCC have offered mentorship and support to the WPPA in their organizing efforts. Legal certification is a critical step to ensure WestJet pilots have a seat at the table in determining the future of this profession.”
