NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the data, cloud and international communications business within NTT (NYSE: NTT), today announced the company's engagement at ONS 2014 in Santa Clara, CA follows a year of continued commercial deployment of its SDN services, recognition and awards for its SDN solutions, and premier customer wins for its SDN-based Enterprise Cloud.
Participation at ONS
In a plenary session on Tuesday, March 4, NTT Com Senior Vice President of Service Infrastructure Yukio Ito will talk about how NTT Com is accelerating its development and deployment of OpenFlow/SDN, SDN-enabled services and significant SDN projects underway in Asia/Pacific. In a theater presentation NTT America’s Senior Solutions Engineer Todd Ridgway will address how NTT Com is leveraging SDN to deliver innovative and differentiated cloud services to enterprises. NTT Com will also demonstrate 1) A Multiple southbound interface control Platform and Portal system or AMPP, a configurable system architecture that accommodates both OpenFlow switches and command line interface (CLI)-based network devices; 2) Lagopus Switch, a scalable, high-performance and elastic software-based OpenFlow switch that leverages multi-core CPUs and network I/O to achieve 10Gbps level-flow processing; and 3) the Versatile OpenFlow Validator or VOLT, a first of a kind system that can validate flow entries and analyze network failures in OpenFlow environments. NTT Com is a Visionary Sponsor of ONS. The company’s booth number is 403.
Real-world SDN Deployments, Award-winning SDN Solutions
As the first service provider in the world to embrace SDN and the OpenFlow communications interface, NTT Com launched its SDN-based Enterprise Cloud in June 2012. Enterprise Cloud became available on a global basis in February 2013 and now employs SDN within and between datacenters in nine countries and eleven locations. In July 2013, NTT Com launched the world’s first SDN-based cloud migration service, On-premises Connection. The service facilitates smooth, flexible transitions to the cloud by connecting customer on-premises systems with NTT Com’s Enterprise Cloud via the Internet using SDN technology.
On-premises Connection substantially reduces the workload normally required to design and configure on-premises networks. Highly secure and fast, the service transfers encrypted data between on-premises systems and NTT Com’s Enterprise Cloud via the Internet at up to 100 Mbps. SDN technology enables clients to make changes promptly and flexibly, such as adjusting bandwidth to transfer large data in off-peak hours. On-demand use helps to minimize the cost of cloud migration because payment for the service, including gateway equipment, is on a per-day basis.
The next step in NTT Com’s SDN roadmap is the planned March 2014 introduction of Arcstar Universal One Virtual Option service, which will allow clients to easily create, use and control overlay networks on-demand via existing corporate networks or the Internet, using SDN virtual technology. The Arcstar Universal One Virtual Option initially will be available in 21 countries, including Japan, the US, Singapore, the UK, Hong Kong, Germany and Australia, eventually expanding to 30 countries.
Arcstar Universal One Virtual Option clients can create flexible, secure, low-cost, on-demand networks simply by installing an app on a PC, smart phone or similar device, or by using an adapter. Integrated management and operation of newly created virtual networks will be possible using the NTT Com Business Portal, which greatly reduces the time to add or change network configurations. NTT Com studies show clients can expect to reduce costs by up to 60% and shorten the configuration period by up 80% compared to the conventional establishment.
In an award-winning deployment, NTT Com developed a nationwide SDN solution for uncompressed HDTV video that was provided to commercial television stations in Japan. The solution enables stable transmission of uncompressed HD video images between the 128 members of the Japanese Commercial Broadcasters Association via a large-capacity and highly reliable network. By using SDN technology, the solution offers simplified functionality to broadcasters by enabling automatic reflection of setting changes, such as the bandwidth requirements of each station according to their program schedule. By centrally managing the network, the technology flexibly and efficiently manages traffic to ensure the flawless and timely transmission of vast amounts of data between stations. This NTT Com SDN solution received the Innovation Award in Content Delivery in September 2013 at IBC2013, an influential international broadcasting industry event.
Industry Recognition & Premier Customers for Enterprise Cloud
NTT Com’s SDN-based services are driving efficiencies among premier customers and garnering industry acclaim. NTT Com is helping Yamaha Motor slash ICT costs and increase uptime and service levels through a multi-year cloud migration of Yamaha’s mission-critical systems, using NTT Com’s Enterprise Cloud and Arcstar Universal One global network.
Industry analysts have also saluted NTT Com’s leadership. In November 2013, the market intelligence firm IDC recognized NTT Com with a Most Innovative Enterprise Offering for its Enterprise Cloud service incorporating SDN with the OpenFlow communications protocol, and the cost savings demonstrated in enterprise customer case studies. In December 2013, IDC positioned NTT Com as a Leader in its “IDC MarketScape: Asia/Pacific Next-Generation Telcos: Hosted Cloud and Data Center Services 2013-2014 Vendor Analysis” (Doc #AP3053513V, December 2013). IDC cited NTT Com’s Enterprise Cloud delivery using SDN as a key strength in its assessment of the company.
