Research and Markets: Quarterly Food Retail Growth - Q4 2013: Germany, France and to Some Extent the UK the Main Engines of Volume Growth

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/l36g4c/quarterly_food) has announced the addition of the "Quarterly Food Retail Growth: Q4 2013" report to their offering.

In Q3 2013 a long-standing trend of European food retail decline (in volume terms) was broken and static to slight volume growth could be seen. In Q4 this positive trend shift held up; Europe as a whole is not losing food retail volumes anymore. The composition of the Q4 figures differs somewhat from the Q3 ones however. In Q3, Germany, France and to some extent the UK were the main engines of volume growth, but in Q4 these countries experienced static volumes. Germany and the UK also saw quite high food inflation.

What saves the day for Europe is a continued positive volume development in the Nordic area (driven by Norway and Sweden), growth resumption in many Eastern European countries (notably the Baltic states, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania) and perhaps most importantly, a much better situation materializing in Southern Europe. Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal are all showing very promising trends, and the huge volume declines of the past few years seem to have been stopped.

Portugal is already showing net volume growth (both in Q3 and Q4), and judging by the trend, the others seem likely to follow suit in the near future. In summary, 2013 got off to a quite nasty start, but the last two quarters give reason for renewed hope. Of particular importance may be that countries in both Southern and Eastern Europe - hard hit by the Euro crises - now look fit to resume growth.
