SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg enters his final year of leading the California Senate, he faces different challenges than when he began. The budget fight will be about how – and if – to spend a surplus, not where to cut. Democrats may control both houses, but a Democratic governor has pledged to hold the line, making it difficult for legislators to win funding for their wish lists.
Senator Steinberg will address these and other issues facing California when he speaks to the Sacramento Press Club on Thursday, February 20 at the club’s monthly buffet lunch at Capitol Plaza, 1025 Ninth Street, 3rd Floor. Since his ascension to the post of Senate President Pro Tempore in 2008, Steinberg has overseen California’s upper chamber during some of the toughest economic times in modern history, while advocating for causes he cares about such as mental health. He was honored with the John F Kennedy Profile in Courage award by the Kennedy Library Foundation for his leadership in bipartisan budget negotiations that helped close California’s massive budget deficit.
As he enters his final year in the California Senate, Steinberg will oversee a vigorous debate over how the state should spend its new surplus, including his efforts to push for expanded kindergarten programs.
