Toshiba America Business Solutions Recycles Nearly 200 Tons of Toner Waste in 2013

Company Almost Doubles 2012’s Recycling Efforts in Pursuit of Zero Waste

IRVINE, Calif.--()--In pursuit of its goal to eliminate e-waste, Toshiba America Business Solutions, Inc. recycled almost 200 tons of used toner products in 2013 through the company’s “Zero Waste to Landfill” program. In partnership with internationally-recognized recycler, Close the Loop, Toshiba nearly doubled the amount of spent imaging consumables it recycled in 2012.

The leading managed print services (MPS) provider and business printing solutions innovator, located in Irvine, Calif., accepts other manufacturers’ spent toner consumables – and was the first company to do so – to completely simplify the recycling process for its customers. Since the start of its Zero Waste to Landfill program in late 2008, Toshiba has collected nearly 450 tons – the approximate weight of 180 full-size pick-up trucks – of e-waste thereby eliminating this significant amount of the environmentally harmful material from filling open land.

Toshiba’s recycling partner, Close the Loop, breaks down spent imaging consumables into component parts, toner, plastic and metal. These components are then recycled and placed back into the market for reuse.

In alliance with Close the Loop, Toshiba transforms used toner products into eLumber to create such outdoor products as park benches, fences and garden boxes for community organizations and such nonprofits as Habitat for Humanity. Plastic from spent imaging consumables is also used in the making of rulers and pens.

Toshiba’s toner recycling efforts is one of the key elements for many of its award-winning e-STUDIO multifunction products becoming part of the EPEAT (Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool) registry. EPEAT is the definitive global rating system for greener electronics.

“Since the very beginnings of our company, Toshiba has placed an emphasis on taking the extra step to do what is necessary to preserve and maintain the environment,” said Toshiba America Business Solutions Chief Green Officer, Tom Walter. “Our Zero Waste to Landfill initiative certainly aligns with our objective to eliminate e-waste from entering landfills. By making it as easy for our customers as possible – from sending the collection box to shipping the spent toner products to Close the Loop – our end users are completely engaged and the dramatic year-over-year increases are evidence of this success,” added Walter.
