TWINSBURG, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--L.J. Star Inc., a leading supplier of sight glasses and visual flow indicators, has released a video that explains how a Metaglas® borosilicate sight glass is made to withstand extreme pressure and thermal shock that would cause an ordinary sight glass to fail catastrophically. Watch the video: http://bit.ly/1k7PzS5.
In the video “Learn the Secret of Sight Glass Strength,” viewers learn how a heating process is used to expand the stainless steel ring and melt a piece of borosilicate glass. At a high temperature, the glass fuses to the inside surface of the ring. After the fusion, the ring moves into a cooling phase and shrinks. Because of the different coefficients of thermal expansion, the glass remains in a state of compression, while the ring is in a constant state of tension.
The most notable part of the process is that the fusion created during manufacturing does not actually give the glass its strength (see white paper at http://bit.ly/1aw4wIv). Rather, it is the compression force on the glass that does so. By keeping glass in a state of compression, its strength increases. For example, a compressed piece of glass rated for 150 psi can be over-pressured to 8,000 psi without failing.
Metaglas is the strongest, most secure sight glass. Manufactured to DIN 7079, Metaglas is produced to the highest safety glass standard in the industry and is ideal for use by food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical and offshore drilling companies.
