NEW YORK & MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Brooklyn-based art duo FAILE (Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller) in collaboration with fellow artist BÄST, today announced the latest incarnation of their interactive Deluxx Fluxx video arcade installation – which will take place in Miami Beach during Art Basel Miami Beach. The FAILE BÄST Deluxx Fluxx Arcade 2013 Miami Beach Presented by Perrier will take place at a vacant storefront on the corner of 16th Street and Washington Avenue and will be open to the public December 3rd-7th.
Featuring newly-designed interactive games, The FAILE BÄST Deluxx Fluxx Arcade 2013 Miami Beach Presented by Perrier invites guests to take a turn with the specially created and programmed video games and pinball machines or play a round of psychedelic foosball. The Miami installation marks the third edition of the Deluxx Fluxx experience. It was originally conceived as a one-off project in London in 2010 and then presented again in 2010 on New York City’s Lower East Side.
“Deluxx Fluxx gives people a way to engage and interact with our work in an unexpected way. We were excited to have an opportunity to work across disciplines -- painting, sculpture and multi-media– to create a completely immersive experience,” says Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller of FAILE.
“Perrier is deeply committed to supporting contemporary and emerging artists, with a century-long legacy of groundbreaking collaborations,” said Priya Shenoy, Perrier Group Marketing Manager. “FAILE are true leaders in the contemporary urban art genre, and we’re thrilled to bring the daring creativity and innovation of Deluxx Fluxx to Miami.”
With this new installation, FAILE and BÄST once again aim to make art less sterile, more fun, and accessible to a broader audience creating a space that is “a magical wonderland of weirdness and art.” Harkening back to the golden age of arcade games, contemporary punk rock and graffiti culture, this neon-laden, interactive and DIY-feeling installation takes the form of a classic video arcade while exploring the tactile possibilities of the wooden cabinet as sculptural medium.
Deluxx Fluxx challenges the contemporary art world’s fixation on ideas of relational aesthetics and democratization, and gives the audience a chance to genuinely engage with the work without feeling the pressure of the traditional gallery environment. The goal: Viewers will forget that they are looking at art, be captivated by the carnivalesque experience – and ultimately, by engaging with the installation, become an essential part of the art itself.
The FAILE BÄST Deluxx Fluxx Arcade 2013 Miami Beach Presented by Perrier was created with the assistance of Designer/Developers Matthew Cooley and Eric Ishii-Eckhardt --their third Deluxx Fluxx project-- along with Programmers Quin Kennedy and Julio Terra. Sound and music were once again designed by Seth Jabour of Les Savy Sav. As well, for the first time, Deluxx Fluxx will feature pinball machines, both of which were retrofitted and facilitated with the assistance of Dave Baach from TiltWarning.
ABOUT FAILE
FAILE is a collaboration between Brooklyn-based artists, Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. Since 1999, they have worked together as FAILE constructing multimedia installations, large-scale paintings and sculptures that have helped to change the perception of the Street Art genre. The artists have been featured in several groundbreaking international street art exhibitions, including Spank the Monkey at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead in 2006 and Street Art at the Tate Modern, London in 2008. They also have exhibited in formal galleries, including the Gagosian in Los Angeles, Lazarides Gallery in London and Perry Rubenstein Gallery in New York.
In recent years, FAILE has been creating monumental installations in the public realm around the world including Temple, a full-scale church in ruins in Praça dos Restauradores Square in Lisbon, Portugal and 2012’s The Wolf Within, a 15-foot high public sculpture in the National Garden Park in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
2013 has been a significant one for the artists, with several high-profile collaborations and installations, including their first ever-solo museum show, which was mounted by the Dallas Contemporary in September 2013. Earlier in the year, FAILE premiered original works that were commissioned by the New York City Ballet for the organization's inaugural Art Series. Les Ballets de FAILE included the 40-foot Tower of FAILE, a suite of new wood-block paintings as well as 21 hand-carved and hand-painted FAILE Wheels. ABOUT BÄST
Brooklyn native BÄST has been a highly influential part of the street art scene for well over 15 years and is one of the few pivotal figures in the international street art movement to retain a considerable degree of anonymity. The artist's exhibitions are rare but attract a great deal of attention. In 2010, he collaborated with FAILE on The Deluxx Fluxx Arcade, which was first shown at The Outsiders, London in 2010, one of the landmark exhibitions in the urban art movement. Later that year, BÄST’s solo show, Botulism took place at Lazarides Rathbone. More recently, BÄST has worked on several collections with Marc Jacobs and, in June 2013, he had a solo show at the Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton.
