Dallas Plumbing Company Celebrates 110 Years of Service in North Texas

Dallas Plumbing Company reflects on being the oldest plumbing and HVAC Company in the area; introducing the Metroplex to the latest trends and technology since 1903

DALLAS--()--2013 represents a major milestone for Dallas Plumbing Company, as it celebrates its 110th anniversary this year. Since its creation in 1903, Dallas Plumbing Company has thrived as the oldest and leading provider of both plumbing and HVAC products and services, spanning four generations of family ownership in two millennia.

“Dallas Plumbing Company not only has a rich history but also an exciting future,” says John Downs, president of Dallas Plumbing Company and one of the third generation owners. “Only a small fraction of businesses from any industry achieve milestones such as 50, 75 or 100 years. The fact that we have thrived for 110 years fills all of us with tremendous pride.”

Some Things Never Change

Mr. Downs attributes his Company’s longevity to its commitment to personalized and superior customer service. That commitment is evident in the fact that Dallas Plumbing Company had a hand in building some of the city’s greatest landmarks – Fair Park, Highland Park Village, and dozens of architecturally-significant homes in the Park Cities, Swiss Avenue and Kessler Park. Dallas Plumbing Company continues to service many of those iconic structures today – a testament to that customer commitment. According to Executive Vice President Mike Downs, an evolution of offerings has been another key component to success. After 50 years of providing only plumbing installation and service, the Company expanded into the air conditioning business. In 1960, Dallas Plumbing Company became a dealer for Carrier Corporation, and continues today as one of the largest Carrier factory-authorized dealers in North Texas.

Also in the 1960s, it entered into the kitchen and bath design and remodeling business, adding the latest kitchen and bath vignette displays to its existing showroom. Today Kitchen & Baths Showroom sells and installs high-end faucets, sinks, showers, toilets, tubs, lavatories and whirlpools to individuals, remodelers, builders and designers across North Texas. Showroom professionals also offer expert consultation and refer consumers to recommended remodelers and designers.

Dallas Plumbing Company’s evolution has also extended to its inventory and the way it sells. With the introduction of ‘big box’ retailers such as Home Depot and Lowes, the Company knew it would be impossible to always offer the lowest price, so it made a significant shift from offering all brands to offering only the best.

“An interesting side effect of the big box phenomenon was a lack of expertise people experienced during the purchase process,” says Cindy Downs, Vice President and fourth generation owner. “People would often buy the wrong product for their home then come to us for advice. While this consulting work didn’t result in a sale, it did establish customer loyalty. People that came to us 10-15 years ago with questions about their starter house are now coming back today to purchase product for their dream house. While our strategies for business development may change over the years, commitment to the customers is at the cornerstone of it all.”

The Second Millennia – Technology Drives the Trends

From pilot-lit water heaters to built-in plumbing to intelligent thermostats, Dallas Plumbing Company has seen it all, serviced it all, and has been at the forefront of industry advancements. Since its inception in 1903, commercial and residential builders across Texas have looked to Dallas Plumbing Company for the latest and greatest in plumbing and HVAC solutions. As the Company begins its second century of operation, it is embracing the industry’s biggest advancement since indoor plumbing – smart technology.

“Without question, economy of energy consumption has topped our clients’ wish list for plumbing and HVAC equipment for quite some time,” says Ray Edwards, Vice President of the Air Conditioning Department. “But what we’ve seen in just the last year or two is a demand for ‘smart technology’ and a customer’s willingness to pay more for intelligent and intuitive product, be it a thermostat or a toilet. Between our ability install and service intelligent systems to our inventory of state-of-the-art kitchen and bath brands, Dallas Plumbing Company is satisfying the needs of today’s iPad generation.”

The iPad and smartphone aren’t only being reflected in the technology behind home systems. Many of the styles and finishes offered at the Kitchen and Bath Showroom reflect that technology in look and design. While traditional and old world styles are still popular, the Company is seeing a huge shift toward slick, sleek and seamless regardless of the home style.
