DURHAM, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Urban Planet has cemented its status as the world’s leader in mobile education by surpassing the 50-million mark for its Urban English® mobile English language lessons delivered since officially launching in 2011. The Durham, NC based mobile education company is also announcing that it has delivered more than 21-million English language lessons in 2013 alone.
The company attributes its success to its ability to secure agreements with the largest and most influential mobile network operators in the world to disseminate its content to their customers. Some key mobile providers who are distributing Urban Planet’s Urban English include Tigo (Latin America), Movistar (Latin America), America Movil (Latin America), Mobily (Middle East), Etisalat (Middle East), Maxis (Asia), Indosat (Asia), Telkomsel (Asia), and Orange (Africa).
“We are thrilled that our Urban English products have been embraced in countries as diverse as Myanmar and Malaysia, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, Guatemala and Colombia,” said Brian OliverSmith, CEO of Urban Planet. “When you consider that our mobile products are not free but people pay to have access with micro-payments, the 50 million mark is a truly amazing feat, of which we are tremendously proud.”
Urban Planet’s Urban English program is currently live in 20 countries with an additional six to ten new countries launching by the end of 2013. People sign up for the program under a subscription model. Lessons are then automatically sent daily through a push model, reminding the end user to use the service. In this sense, it is not just an 'app' that one downloads and then never looks at again.
Urban Planet is the GSMA Global Mobile Award for Best Mobile Learning Innovation winner, a 2013 CODiE Award Finalist, a Frost & Sullivan Most Innovative App designee, and a Gartner Cool Vendor in Education Technology. Urban Planet’s products are available worldwide, with business in 38 countries and growing. With its pioneering audio with SMS delivery, the company’s mobile learning products can be accessed on over 95% of all mobile phones.
