MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EDF EN Canada Inc., a subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, is pleased to announce that the Government of Quebec has issued the decree authorizing the construction and operation of the 24.6 MW La Mitis Community Wind Project.
La Mitis Community Wind Project, located in the unorganized territory Lac-à-la-Croix in the MRC de La Mitis, administrative region of the Bas-St-Laurent, demonstrates the importance of collaboration and support of local communities in the successful development and implementation of wind energy projects. The project will consist of 12 turbines supplied by REpower Systems SE. Construction is scheduled to commence in Spring 2014 with commissioning expected in the Fall 2014.
‘’EDF Energies Nouvelles welcomes with great pride the government decree authorizing the construction and operation of La Mitis Community Wind Project. We sincerely thank the Government of Quebec for its permission to proceed with this innovative project,’’ said Alex Couture, Director of Project Development for EDF EN Canada.
Mr. Couture further added, “We share ownership of this project with Energie renouvelable de la Mitis who invest in a proportion of 30%. An annual voluntary contribution of $61,500 will be paid by the project during the 20-year operational phase to the MRC of La Mitis. In addition, a contribution of $200,000 into a Community Development Fund will occur at the time of commissioning.”
“The development of green and sustainable energy is a critical issue for our MRC and its 16 municipalities who can testify to the social acceptability of the project to their citizens,’’ said the Prefect, Michel Côté.
Hydro-Québec Distribution awarded EDF EN Canada two wind projects in December 2010 as a result of the 2009 Hydro-Québec call for tenders, which was focused on community projects. In total, EDF EN Canada will have developed and built 1,003.2 MW of wind energy facilities in Quebec by the end of 2015 for a total investment of over $2 billion in Quebec.
