“There are opportunities to find happy careers everywhere, “said Heidi Golledge, CEO and co-founder of CareerBliss. “Analyzing workplace happiness in all cities is important for those who may not want the hustle and bustle of a large city, but still want to find a rewarding workplace culture.”

The CareerBliss data evaluate key factors that affect work happiness including one’s relationship with his or her boss and co-workers, work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, daily tasks, and job control over work performed on a daily basis. The data account for how an employee values each factor as well as how important that factor is to the employee’s overall happiness. Each review is given an average score indicating where the company places between one and five. A minimum of 30 reviews per city was required for this data. A mid-size city is defined as an area with a population of greater than 100,000, but less than 1 million.

CareerBliss data reveal that coworkers and senior management had a big impact on overall happiness in the happiest mid-size cities. Overall, employees stated that having positive relationships with others fostered a happy work environment.

“At CareerBliss, our goal is to offer the tools and resources to help people make happier career decisions,” said Golledge. “By understanding what impacts happiness in cities of all sizes, we can make a blissful career choice.”
