LOS ANGELES--()--Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a proclamation recognizing this past Friday as ‘EY Connect Day’ in Los Angeles as more than 800 EY professionals left their laptops at the office to volunteer throughout the community. It’s all part of the firm’s ‘EY Connect Day’ which gives employees nationwide time off so that they might give back to their communities.

“I commend EY’s commitment to L.A.’s economy and our communities,” Mayor Garcetti said. “As Mayor, I’m working to focus government on solving our most pressing problems. But the difference we can make is exponentially greater with the help of volunteers like those from EY.”

“We’re proud that our flexible culture allows EY people to volunteer throughout the year. EY Connect Day enables us to come together locally and across the country on the same day to strengthen our firm and our communities,” said Patrick Niemann, Managing Partner for Greater Los Angeles. “Spending a day together in service to others helps create a foundation for high performing teams, and gives us a valuable way to connect, to communicate and to work together toward a shared purpose: to build a better working world.”

Among the ‘EY Connect Day’ projects this year:

  • Thirty firm volunteers worked with the United Way and YWCA to provide coaching on interviewing techniques to Job Corps students, conduct mock job interviews, offer resume feedback and assist with financial education classes.
  • 150 people readied food baskets at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.
  • Building on last year’s project where EY volunteers established a lending library at the Variety Boys & Girls Club in East Los Angeles, this year’s volunteers catalogued, labeled and shelved an additional 1,000 books for the club’s collection. The project has enabled club members to read over 500 books in the past year.

Other ‘EY Connect Day’ projects in Los Angeles included hosting elementary school students at the California Science Center, building homes at Habit for Humanity and numerous others.

Each year, EY professionals throughout the West Coast volunteer more than 19,000 hours of their time to nonprofit organizations in their communities.
