American Water’s Dr. Mark LeChevallier Appointed to Water Environment Research Foundation’s Research Council

VOORHEES, N.J.--()--American Water (NYSE: AWK), the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, today announced Dr. Mark LeChevallier, Director of Innovation and Environmental Stewardship, has been appointed to the Water Environment Research Foundation’s (WERF) Research Council for a three year term beginning January 1, 2014.

WERF Research Council members serve as technical advisors that provide oversight and coordination across the entire research portfolio, identifying and developing new research initiatives, and making recommendations to the Board for funding allocations among research areas. The first meeting will take place in February.

Dr. LeChevallier received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Microbiology from Oregon State University and received his doctorate in Microbiology from Montana State University. He has received more than 20 awards, has authored or co-authored more than 100 research papers and has been the principal investigator or co-investigator on nearly 60 research grants totaling over $31 million.

Dr. LeChevallier has participated in the development of drinking water regulations by serving on many committees, councils, workgroups and review panels at the local and national level. He has also been dedicated to advancing the science of water through participation in national research foundations, including conducting nearly $1.5 million of research on the topic of water reuse and planning.

But most importantly, Dr. LeChevallier is known around the industry for his skill of being able to make complex scientific concepts understandable to the less informed, something that is a challenge for many people. With this goal in mind, he began writing a blog on American Water's Website at http://www.drwater.amwater.com/.

The Water Environment Research Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed in 1989, is America's leading independent scientific research organization dedicated to wastewater and stormwater issues.

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs approximately 6,700 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 14 million people in more than 30 states and parts of Canada.
