ROCHESTER, N.Y.--()--Carestream Health announced it has begun shipping its wireless CARESTREAM DRX 2530C small-format digital radiography detector to healthcare providers across the globe. The detector, which received FDA clearance several months ago, offers high quality, low dose X-ray exams for pediatric, orthopaedic and general radiology applications.

The new cesium iodide detector’s smaller size (25 cm x 30 cm) and high DQE (detective quantum efficiency) can enhance care for premature babies and infants in the pediatric ICU. It can also offer lower dose than computed radiography cassettes or gadolinium scintillator detectors.

The 365-bed Children’s Hospital Los Angeles was one of the first facilities to place an order for the new DRX 2530C detector. “We believe this new detector can enhance care by increasing the quality of X-ray images captured of premature babies in our 50-bed neonatal ICU,” said Dr. Marvin Nelson, the hospital’s Chairman of Radiology. “The ability for technologists and physicians to immediately view images of these fragile patients will also be a dramatic improvement over the processing times required by the CR cassettes we currently use.”

The new DRX 2530C detector fits into a tray located underneath an incubator, so it allows technologists to obtain X-ray images to monitor the condition of ill or premature babies without moving them. It is also ideal for tabletop exams such as knee, elbow, skull and other exams that may require a patient to hold the detector or require a smaller field of view.

“The DRX 2530C detector is the latest addition to our market-leading family of digital X-ray detectors that includes the DRX-1 detector and DRX-1C detector,” said Diana L. Nole, President, Digital Medical Solutions, Carestream. “As we continue to invest in new detector technology, we are simultaneously expanding our family of DRX systems that allow healthcare facilities to retrofit or install new systems for X-ray rooms and mobile imaging.”

Monash Health in Australia was the first site to receive Carestream’s DRX 2530C wireless detector and worldwide demand for this system is strong due to the flexibility of the DRX platform. Like Carestream’s DRX-1 and DRX-1C detectors, the new DRX 2530C detector can be used with any member of the DRX family of wireless room-based and mobile imaging systems. This flexibility is part of Carestream’s commitment to enhance productivity and maximize each healthcare provider’s investment in imaging technology.

The company’s entire radiology product portfolio will be on display at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America that begins Dec. 1 in Chicago, Ill.

Carestream offers advanced image processing software that is used to optimize image quality for pediatric patients. The software includes seven patient sizes as specified by FDA guidelines for pediatric exams. Carestream also offers specialized image processing software for other applications including enhanced viewing of tubes and PICC lines and pneumothorax.
