NCKU Museum Signs MOU With Kyoto University Museum to Facilitate Academic Staff Exchange

TAINAN, Taiwan--()--National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, and the Kyoto University Museum at Kyoto University, Japan, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Wednesday for promoting mutual staff training and exchange and exploring the potential for collaboration between both universities.

NCKU Museum Director Dr. Ching-Hwei Chue and the Kyoto University Museum Director Dr. Ohno Terufumi signed the MOU on behalf of their respective organizations.

Dr. Chue welcomed Dr. Ohno and hailed the signing of MOU, expressing optimism that this is a good beginning for future cooperation.

“NCKU and Kyoto University are both located at the ancient capital of both countries,” said Dr. Ohno adding that after signing the MOU, the cooperation between both universities will deepen and widen in the coming future.

He said that in Japan, there are now at least 40 university museums; however, those of major national universities are rather new.

The Kyoto university museum was founded in 1997. Since the founding of Kyoto University in 1897, research specimens and objects have been collected over the past 100 years, according to Dr. Ohno.

“NCKU has many interesting mechanical models that are used for educational purpose before and after the war” said Dr. Ohno after his visit to NCKU museum, “and it is very interesting to know many of them are built in Kyoto.”

Dr. Ohno also said, “We have some Taiwanese folklore collection, very small, but very interesting to know what kind of meanings these collections may have, so we have several potential to cooperate with each other.”

Dr. Ohno revealed that they have some possibility to invite professors and researchers from NCKU to Kyoto University, and together the researchers from both sides will discover some interesting stories along the way.

“We also have faculty of technology who are interested in mechanic and you have one of the oldest locomotives in Taiwan. I think it might be very interesting to do some research together,” Dr. Ohno added.
