CARTERSVILLE, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, through its semi-annual Chapters in Action Program, committed more than $100,000 this summer toward projects, programs and support for Georgia’s state parks and historic sites. The Program is made possible by Friends members and local donors who contribute time, effort, money and support to preserve and protect Georgia's greatest treasures.

Established in 2010, the Friends Chapters In Action Program has generated more than $900,000 since its inception for projects, programs and repairs in Georgia’s state parks and historic sites. The summer funding grant will bring several important efforts to fruition, such as essential maintenance and repairs at Tallulah Gorge State Park, which will allow for greater wheelchair and stroller accessibility to one of the most picturesque views in Georgia. The critical need to replace the approximately 50-year-old air conditioning unit at the Dahlonega Gold Museum with a new, energy efficient system can also be addressed. In addition to improving air quality to better preserve the building and its artifacts, the new system will also reduce environmental impacts. The Chapters In Action Program funds also create the opportunity for Wormsloe State Historic Site to install a historically accurate replica of the cannon used to defend Savannah during the 1740s, offering visitors an authentic look into the past.

During the past year, Friends engaged more than 6,000 volunteers statewide who provided support valued at more than $1.5 million for Georgia's state parks and historic sites. Funding provided through generous donations, combined with volunteer efforts, is fundamental to the success of the Friends Chapters In Action Program. Thanks to more than 24,000 member households, donors and partners, Friends is committed to continuing its longstanding partnership with and support of the state parks.
