IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kurion, Inc., an innovator in nuclear, mixed and hazardous waste management, announced today the appointment of Stephen (Steve) Piccolo as the executive chairman of the board of directors, effective immediately. Former executive chairman Ralph DiSibio will remain a director of the company and will chair the governance and human capital committees.
"During the last year we sought to identify and recruit the best talent in the industry to accelerate Kurion’s growth,” said Kurion Director Ralph DiSibio. “Steve's retirement from URS presented an opportunity to bring on board an industry leader with vast knowledge of the nuclear waste challenges worldwide and the man who led the Savannah River vitrification plant during its most productive years. Steve rounds out a team that is second to none in the business, and I’m confident that he is the right person to oversee Kurion's growth in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, both organically and through strategic acquisitions.”
Piccolo brings 35 years of experience in organizational development and facility management in the nuclear power, fossil power, chemical production and manufacturing industries. Until his recent retirement, he spent three decades in the nuclear waste industry managing large projects at the Hanford, Wash., and Savannah River waste sites and Yucca Mountain. Most recently he served as executive vice president for the URS Global Management & Operations Service Group. During his career Piccolo also served as executive vice president and deputy general manager for USA-Repository Services at Yucca Mountain, president of the Washington Savannah River Company and general manager for the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant.
Kurion CEO Bill Gallo added, “In my work with Steve over the years he has impressed me with his sound judgment and knowledge of the nuclear industry. He is a valuable addition to the Kurion team.”
Piccolo earned a Master’s of Liberal Studies degree from Eastern Michigan University in Interdisciplinary Technology & Business Administration, a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of Rhode Island in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, and he studied advanced management at Duke University. Piccolo lives in Aiken, S.C.
