ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Westwood College has partnered with schools throughout the Atlanta Public Schools system to provide technology, support, supplies and funds for schools with budget shortfalls or unbudgeted needs. The total contribution of approximately $25,000 aims to support students and families who have limited access to technology and supplies in order to help ensure their success at school. These efforts also support Westwood’s commitment to finding meaningful ways to support the communities in which they live and serve.
Most recently, Westwood College partnered with George Washington Carver School of Technology to help replace technology that was lost when one of the school’s classrooms was vandalized, leaving many students without access to basic technology. Members of Westwood’s IT team, along with faculty from the college’s School of Technology, refurbished 14 laptop computers and donated them to the school. In addition, the college provided approximately $1,500 worth of school supplies. The computers were delivered to the high school earlier this month.
“During the past two years Westwood has provided GW Carver School of Technology with excellent experiential learning opportunities in addition to much needed technology support,” said Rosie Onwuneme, guidance counselor for GW Carver School of Technology. “When it comes to getting involved in the local community and supporting the initiative of Atlanta-area high schools, no institution does it better than Westwood.”
Westwood has also supported several programs at other area high schools that encourage students to prepare for their future careers including Monroe High School’s dress for success event, the Flight Track Award Program that is designed to promote positive student behavior and school spirit and funding for students to attend the Future Business Leaders of America competition, both at South Cobb High School and the Atlanta Public Schools Career Motivation Week. Westwood has also performed several bus tours in which hundreds of area high school students have had the opportunity to experience and gain exposure to either the college’s Midtown and Northlake campuses.
Westwood College students are also helping support local high school students while gaining valuable experience in the process themselves. At a recent Jack and Jill of America event, which is designed to help youth learn and practice leadership skills as well as build leadership character, students and faculty from Westwood’s School of Healthcare performed health screenings for attendees and gave presentations about what it takes to find a career in the medical field.
“These programs and sponsorships are all about success – both for the high school students as well as Westwood students,” said Vivian Santana, High School Relations Manager for Westwood’s two Atlanta campuses. “We have been able to help hundreds of area high school students gain access to tools and experiences they need as well as provide valuable learning experiences for our existing students.”
