WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) announces the establishment of the “Nadine Hogan Memorial Fund” to honor the legacy of a trustee who served on its Board for almost fifteen years and supported PADF as a member of its Advisory Committee.
The Memorial Fund will assist projects for economic and agricultural development, civil society and democracy strengthening, and disaster relief and preparedness in Central America.
“Nadine’s dedication and commitment to the people of Central America are at the heart of this new Fund. Her many contributions to the region and her passion for development will live on as PADF will create new opportunities and provide assistance to those in need,” said Frank Gómez, President of the PADF Board of Trustees.
Ms. Hogan helped the Foundation respond to Hurricane Mitch in the late 1990s in Honduras and the earthquake in El Salvador in 2002, and to aid victims of floods and crises in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and other countries.
The family, together with the Central American Poultry and Egg Association (CA-PEQ), provided donations to create the Memorial Fund as a vehicle through which others can contribute who worked with Nadine Hogan and admired her commitment to the people of the Americas. She aided the establishment of the CA-PEQ in response to new opportunities created by the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
Ms. Hogan, who passed away on December 29, 2012, served in the White House Personnel Office, as Associate Director of the Peace Corps, and as Regional USAID Director for Central America and Panama (ROCAP) in the 1980s, earning several U.S. government awards and distinguished recognitions from the governments of Guatemala and Honduras. She left the U.S. Senior Foreign Service in 1992 with the rank of Minister Counselor, working for the next two decades as an international consultant to Central American governments, private sector groups and agencies such as the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
Throughout her career, Ms. Hogan strengthened Central American institutions and implemented programs that empowered women, expanded micro-enterprises, nurtured human resources, and promoted agricultural development. She supported early childhood nutrition and advances in education and business development, while helping Honduras and El Salvador achieve Millennium Challenge Compacts with the U.S. Government.
As an advisor to several Central American first ladies and their foundations, and as a member of negotiating teams for CAFTA, she tirelessly advanced partnerships and solidarity between the peoples of Central America and the United States. President George W. Bush appointed her Vice Chair of the Inter-American Foundation in 2003 and she served on the Boards of Caribbean/Central American Action and other groups, in addition to PADF.
Born in Centralia, Illinois, Ms. Hogan graduated in 1964 from the Saint Louis University Nursing School in Missouri, and earned her Master’s degree in communications at the University of Colorado in 1978. She began her work in Latin America in 1967, delivering medical supplies from Colorado to earthquake victims in Guatemala. At that time, she returned there as a volunteer at the Berhorst Clinic in Chimaltanango.
Ms. Hogan is survived by her husband, R. James Hogan of Alexandria, Virginia and her daughter Patricia Ann Picado and grandchildren of Springfield, Virginia.
