IKEA Covina Celebrates 10 Years in the Community

COVINA, Calif.--()--IKEA is celebrating ten years in the City of Covina on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. It is a milestone birthday since originally opening up its doors on May 7, 2003.

Within the past decade, IKEA Covina has welcomed over 13 million visitors, has served approximately 1.4 million meatball plates in the restaurant and has employed approximately 50 new hires every year. Over the years many things have changed, but the commitment to provide well-designed, functional home furnishing products that as many people as possible will be able to afford them has remained.

“We have also focused on being a responsible community partner and created strong relationships,” said IKEA Covina Store Manager Kristien Verbeke. IKEA has given back to the community through projects like the renovation of the Hollfelder Teen Center and Community Room in the City of Covina, planting trees at Workman Elementary School and most recently donated furniture to establish the first Children’s Chinese Library in Southern California located in Rowland Heights.

IKEA Covina will be celebrating this milestone birthday with a cake cutting ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 9:30am in the restaurant. IKEA Covina is pleased to welcome Mayor Walt Allen as a special guest. The public is also invited to participate and enjoy free breakfast and coffee until 11am. “We are looking forward to many more years to come,” added Verbeke.

Located on 12.5 acres along I-10 at Barranca Avenue, the 325,000-s.f. IKEA Covina opened in May 2003. In addition to 10,000 exclusively designed items, IKEA Covina presents 43 different room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 260-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties as well as American dishes. Also, IKEA Covina had a solar energy system installed in 2011 as part of an initiative to roll-out solar panels on nearly 90% of IKEA US locations.

IKEA strives to be ‘The Life Improvement Store,’ and since its 1943 founding in Sweden has offered home furnishings of good design and function at low prices so the majority of people can afford them. There are currently more than 340 IKEA stores in 41 countries, including 38 in the U.S. IKEA incorporates sustainability into day-to-day business and supports initiatives benefiting children and the environment.
